  • What's the Beep in Low Range???

Hi - I tried to bore my wife up at the fire trail from Bilpin to Kurrjong by putting my VX Auto Diesel in low range, the low range light flashed and the low range beeper beeped but no gear noises and nothing happened. I was in park when I engaged it?

Any ideas why - very annoying compared to a manual low range box - and what if I had needed low range... where is it, am I missing something?

    cheers

forgot to mention that I drove slowly afterwards for about 30 seconds but it kept on beeping at me...

come to a stop and try shifting while in neutral, not in park.

Low range takes a few seconds to engage. You need to be stopped, out of gear, then turn the dial to L4 and wait until the light stops flashing, then engage gear and be on your way.

Thanks guys - I'll try it in neutral and see if that works... I'll let you know just in case anyone else has the same issue.

we've all tried that - thinking that nature was going to get our other halves a little more relaxed... but alas seldom works...

anyway, put it in N then switched on Low Range, worked perfectly with a nice little whirrrr of mechanics. Maye I shoul hve read the instruction manual? ops:

maybe, but what fun would that be !!

this is one thing that makes me miss the navara. i used to be able to change into 4wd while moving in the ute, can't do it in the Prado.

Good to see it was an easy fix.

Re: What's the Beep in Low Range???

for sure before you change the H4 to L4 do this steps :
1- change gear position to "N"
                  2- Hold the hand brakes
3- Remove your foot from the brake pads
                  4- change to "L4"
5- Wait for a sign "sound"

do the same for L4 to H4

this is for more safety . because maybe the diffrential broke if you used it with wrong way . its car not a play so there is a lot of things if you do it wrong maybe you will pay a lot of money to fix it .

the same steps to activate rear & centre differential

                    Hi there
I might be wrong but I think the Navarra is a 4x2/4x4 truck and that is why you can engage 4x4 while driving ; Prado is permanent 4x4 so this is not necessary. On any 4x4 vehicule engaging low range (or moving back to high range) requires to stop the vehicule, and yes with an AT transmission Neutral must be engaged, not Park.

                    Cheers from France

                        That's right ! I have TrailBlazer 4x4 , and I can switch it from 4x2 to H4 while driving ! but when I stuck in sand I have to do "N" position to engage the L4 TrailBlazer Has 4X2 , H4 and L4 . SO You're right .

Re: What's the Beep in Low Range???

In other 4x4's when you change from 2 wheel to 4 wheel the gear ratios are still the same just the tranfer has ingaged the front wheels which are already spinning at the same speed as the rear so no big deal. When moving to low range it would be like in a manual driving at 100kmh and dropping it back to 2nd gear. Low range is just a reduced drive ratio. New cars electronics stop this from being engaged until you stop but older cars you can pull the lever and grind gears all day until you slow down or stop and let the gears engage.

I miss the fully mechanical low range lever I had in the 60 series, the 90 although the lever is still there, is electric engage which means its not in until the light comes on...this can be some time down the track or up a climb before it locks in properly....

                              4 LO engagement

                              H All,

I understand this is an old thread, but any help would be appreciated.

All of a sudden my 2010 Prado 150 AUTO DD (85K on clock ) makes a scraping noise when I turn the switch to engage 4Lo. I disengage the 4Lo switch and the same scraping noise is heard. All while idling and in neutral

All though I have never heard this before, Toyota tell me this is normal

                              Any help would appreciated
                              Regards SAFTGT
