  • Reversing and the Genuine Tow kit

    hi all,

i thought that i have read somewhere that if you have a genuine towbar and wiring installed, when a trailer is connected, it automatically deactivates the parking sensors.

i can't find the post again, can anyone confirm if this is how it is meant to work?

    Edit - fixed spelling.

Normally there is a switch on the flap of the 7 pin plug (so when plug is inserted) it disengages the parking sensors. On my last car (not a Toyo) they forgot to hook this up properly also, so drives you crazy when something is hooked up and you reverse!

Sorry mate I didnt see the reply. My factory kit DOES deactivate the parking sensor when a trailer plug is in use.

Re: Reversing and the Genuine Tow kit

I towed our little box trailer on the weekend and the sensors didn't automatically deactivate. Don't know if they are supposed to on the GXL.

There is a button on the dash to turn them on and off though so not sure if there's a need for them to be automatically deactivated. I actually found it good to have them on when maneuvering into a tight spot as the side sensors let me know how far I could go before jack knifing.

                Cheers, Sam.

Re: Reversing and the Genuine Tow kit

While it is only a push of a button to turn off the sensors, my Genuine Tow Kit doesn't turn of the parking sensors when a trailer is connected.

If it is designed to work that way, and it doesn't, then it should be fixed.

Has anyone had any joy getting Toyota to fix it ? If so I will try to get it fixed at the next service.

                        Cheers

Re: Reversing and the Genuine Tow kit

Mine definitely deactivates when towing my caravan (with a brake controller), and also deactivates when towing my caged trailer. I suspect it 'derives' some intelligence from the trailer connection to determine that a trailer is connected.

Anyway, it does work, or should, and I have noticed that if I disconnect the trailer electical connection it then alarms all the time. My advice....carefully check your towbar electrical connections.

Re: Reversing and the Genuine Tow kit

I towed a (box) trailer for the first time today. I have the genuine Toyota towbar and 7-pin plug. The rear sensors detect the A-frame of the trailer and a warning beep sounds continuously whilst in reverse gear, unless I turn them off with the option on the steering wheel (Kakadu). There is nothing intelligent about the setup; it just goes nuts detecting the trailer.

I have a brand new prado GXL with a genuine tow bar and when I hooked up my brothers ski boat yesterday it DID NOT deactivate the sensors.
