  • Clicking in the suspension/steering

Hi to all , I have been an avid reader of all things Prado but as of today I am a new member. This is my first post as I am need of some help and/or guidance. My current Prado is a 2016 GX 2.8litre diesel with 2 inch lift, 18inch VX wheels, ARB Summit Bar, on board compressor, underbody protection, side steps, rhino rack, draw system, 37litre on board water tank plus a few other bits and pieces. I've owned the vehicle for approx 2 years, it has 108,000 on the clock and it is my 3rd Prado since 2002 and I absolutely love this vehicle. About 12,000 klms ago we were in Karumba FNQ and I noticed a "clicking" feeling coming through the steering wheel at low speed. I can feel the click as much as hear it as it is only very faint. My first thought was it was a CV joint but they are both good. It can only be felt at low speed and is there driving forward and reverse , straight line and cornering. Since then I have done the following to try and isolate the problem 1. changed wheels 2.changed tyres 3.rebalanced tyres 4.disconnected and reconnected front sway bar 5.checked for anything loose in the steering column 6.checked suspension/shock rubbers 7.checked wheel bearings 8. replaced brake pads. The only thing I haven't done is swap out the entire steering rack which would be an expensive exercise that may or may not fix things. The problem is not getting any worse but it is still there. I am open to any suggestions to help me try and fix this as it is driving me nuts. Any help would be appreciated Thanks

I stopped reading after line 2 when my eyes hurt. But I'd be taking it to pedders and getting it put on the shaker jig to see if they can isolate it.

My money is on the inner rack end, probably drivers side. I had to do two in two years, you will get away with it for less than $500 including labour.

Hi to All, it has taken a while but I eventually took the Prado to Pedders who diagnosed the problem as being "in the steering rack". That being the case I decided to replace the entire rack. New genuine rack including tie rod ends was $1750 from Motorama Toyota Browns Plains and with the help of a friend and using his hoist replaced it in about 4 hours including beer breaks. Problem solved
