  • 80k Service

Hi all, just did most of the 80k service on my 2018 Prado GXL, which was quite fun. Bar a few items.
This might be a stupid question, do the first two apply to a Auto (clutch/manual), my assumption being they don't.
Also, is there an easy way to check the transfer / auto transmission oil? Without having the scanner to check for the temp?
Might have to take to the mechanic for these last couple.

    - Inspect Clutch Fluid
    - Inspect Manual transmission Oil
    - Inspect Automatic Transmission Fluid
    - Inspect Transfer Oil

No, it doesn’t apply to an auto. You have no clutch fluid or manual transmission oil.
If your vehicle has done 80k and never had a transmission fluid flush, I wouldn’t even bother checking it, just book it in for a full service.
Checking the transfer case fluid is simply undoing the fill nut and putting you finger (clean) in to check the level. Personally I’ve never done that, I just change the diff and transfer fluids regularly instead.
A full fluid flush in the auto box should cost around $400 and use 15 litres of fluid approximately. Normally this needs a trans specialist with a flushing machine.

Thanks Daniel, appreciate the help mate.
Not sure if there is something different about the Prados? but basically everyone I've spoken to thinks that changing diff oils / transfer every 80k is a bit of an overkill. Maybe this is how it was back in the day and things have changed?
99% of the time Prado is just on the highway / city driving, might tow a friends boat few times a year for a fish.

        No worries.
Toyota require changing the diff and transfer fluids every 40k. I’ve always done mine at 40k or every two years. Anytime I see a decent amount of water the diff fluids get dropped.
Not sure who you’ve been talking too, but I’ve never owner a car that had anything much different. In my opinion, Toyotas recommended change intervals are under perfect conditions and probably the latest I’d consider doing any servicing.
I buy a 20L drum of diff fluid and a small pump, changing them only takes 1hr so it’s a cheap preventative thing.
