  • Having to prime diesel fuel pump daily

Hi all Prado 150 D4D experts,
We are travelling in WA and a couple of days ago when driving along a track in 4wd, an alarm buzzer sounded in the Prado.
    A constant beep beep beep.
We initially hought it was the Water Watch alarm which I fitted.
I drained the Water Watch bowl and primed fuel filter and started car.
Alarm sound continued and I realised it wasn't coming from the Water Watch.
No other warning signs showed up on the dash, indicating anything was amiss, so I continued driving 10k home. Alarm eventually ceased after approx 20 minutes.
Ever since then, after the car has been sitting for over a few hours or overnight, when starting, it will wind over and over for about 7 seconds, unless I prime the fuel pump, as though it is starved for fuel.
Temp gauge normal, no fuel leaks and no unusual sounds coming from motor.

Car has done 248,000k & still has original injectors etc.

According to the on board fuel usage computer, the car also appears to be using more diesel. On start up, the computer shows an initial 40- 60l per 100k and settles down to around 15l per 100k. Towing, I was using around 12-13l per 100k, it is now showing 15 -18l per 100k.
Apart from this the car runs quite well
Could it be sucking air from somewhere or might it be an injector problem?
Any assistance in diagnosing and solving the issue would be greatly appreciated as we will driving back to Qld next week and want to ensure we can get there OK.
if it is not critical, I would be happy to have it attended to back home as there is a several weeks wait to have vehicles looked at ATM.
    Much appreciated,
    Rob

As the need to bleed the fuel system has only started after draining the after draining the water watch bowl logically the cause is most likely the water watch bowl drain seal.
I would remove the drain plug and inspect the o-ring and replace or clean and refit.

      Rob
