A while back I posted on avibration that I am getting in my petrol Prado 150 (2015 VX with 94000km) but the problem still persists and would like any advise on what to check next. Its a distinct vibration that you can feel when gripping the steering wheel mostly with 2 hands. Only 1 hand and its much less prominent.
One issue is I cannot find another one to test drive, there are so few here in KZN for sale, guess they very popular cars. My inlaws 120 doesnt do it but its a 2006 so much older.
Symptoms
When you anywhere between 2000 and 4500 you can feel a very rough vibration comething through the steering. Lower revs its smooth as silk. Its regardless of speed but rather revs and it does it in every gear (well 5th and 6th would have to be going very fast to replicate but you get my drift).
To test I rev it between 2000 and 4500 and going up hill or down you can feel the vibration through the steering wheel.
I rev it to 4500rpm and can really feel the vibration, I let off the throttle and its still there. I then press down again on the accellerator and for a brief moment there is calmness (about 2 seconds) and you can't feel any vibration. Then after about 2 seconds you can feel it again. Like there is a delay in the vibration coming back.
From 2000rpm it does get progressibly worse however sometimes between 2500 and 3000 the vibration goes away and then comes back.
The car has been in with Toyota and they have done the following:
Replaced steering rack and tie rod ends and bushes
Replaced engine mountings and gearbox mountings
Changed main drive shaft (@ 90,000km)
Wheels have been completed refurbished (stripped and resprayed) and new tyres
Spark plugs changed and used injector cleaner
2 new batteries (main and dual)
My assumptions and correct me if I am wrong and any advise, comments etc.
Going from reving in gear and changing into neautral, the vibration completely dissappears and you can rev to 6000rpm in neutral and no vibration whatsoever. This tells me that everything inside the engine and mountings is working 100% and no problems there.
Also standing still in neutral and revving, cannot feel any vibration whatsoever.
If it was the bearings or any of the other suspension or steering components then you would still feel it when driving for example @70km/h but putting the gear into neutral elminiates all vibration.
I think its got something to do with the gearbox or torque converter or even maybe the smaller drive shaft between the transfer case and gearbox. However they quite expensive items to replace and if nothigns wrong then all that $$$. Anybody have any ideas on what it could possibly be? Do you think it might be worthwhile to take the drive shafts off one at a time and drive in 2wd if at all possible? I am based in South Africa, Durban.
Thank you.
