  • Trouble filling fuel tank

On a recent trip the fuel gauge showed over half full but the red light warning light started flashing. Sure enough down the road the vehicle ran out of fuel. (The gauge was showing an incorrect reading) Filling the tank was a slow process with only about three litres could be added which went slowly down the filler tube before another three litres could be added. It had all of the signs of a air lock in the tank system. We attached a hose to the small pipe outlet near the filler cap and blew down it hoping to clear any blockage but it appeared clear. Has anyone on this forum had a similar issue? The vehicle is a 3.0 liter diesel 2015 Prado. We have had no such problems with the Prado before the trip.

    HI Doug32,

Pretty common problem due to the sub-tank to main tank fuel transfer system not operating properly.

When did you last replace the rear fuel filter located near the main tank? (normal replaced every 20,000 Kms) As if this is restricted the venturi will not function so no fuel is drawn from the sub-tank to the main tank.

When this happens the sub-tank remains full so gauge stays around 1/2 full but main tank empties and you run out of fuel.

The two tanks share a common breather pipe so the sub-tank being over full effects the filler breather function making it hard to refill the main tank.

So suggest you check the Fuel Pump Fuse and Relay in the engine bay fuse box are OK.

If yes replace the rear fuel filter and if that does not sort then you may have to have the main tank dropped to check/replace the in-tank fuel pump.
