  • Lexus Gx460 with prado sub-tank

    Hi folks,
back on this forum, as I was not using my 120 series for any serious offroading, and had moved over to other vehicles. I just sold the 120 and do miss the 180litre capacity. I have now a Lexus gx460, which is basically a prado 150 with toyota 4.6L V8 engine. My Gx460 has the kdss and only 1 main tank of 87litres.

I have just bought a used rear door with spare tyre mounting, and a prado 150 series subtank.

I need some thoughts on how to plumb it all in,

I believe the single tank of the GX460 will be similar to the single tank of the 150 series, and it has 1 port missing, and the fuel pump housing doesnt have the little venturi pump that transfers fuel from the sub-tank to the main tank. In order for this to work with the factory hoses, I would need to buy a main tank from a prado with the extra port, which probably is the return line, and the correct fuel pump cradle with the venturi pump, which would be added cost, which would be option b.

Alternatively, as a company in the US makes sub-tanks for the gx460, use an external fuel pump to transfer from their pump to the filler hose, the port to the transfer is plumbed into the filller hose past the sub-tank y junction, the pump is activated with button placed on the dash. This seems to be an easier method.

The prado 150 series sub tank has 3 fuel ports, feed, return and evap connection, and it has a 3 wire fuel level sender. I am going to forget about the fuel level sender, as that would be too much work, and use the 3 lines, evap I will "T" in with the main tank evap line, the main feed line from subtank via a external fuel pump to the filler hose, but the return line on the sub-tank not sure where to plumb that in with a "T"

    HI Vanhack,

The sub-tank return is only used on the diesel models so you can just blank off and continue to return fuel to the main tank from the engine the same as the V6 petrol models here. The third port and venturi pump for the fuel transfer is part of the pump assembly (P/No 7702060650) so you shouldn't need to buy a whole tank unless there is a major difference between the versions with (P/No 7700160A40) and without sub-tank (P/No 7700135A31).

The pic below is how its plumbed on the Petrol Prado 150, not shown is the evap and breather lines but these are T connected as you already mentioned..
