  • Need some help on new Prado buy. GXL vs ZR

    Hi everyone. New guy here.
I'm the owner of a HDJ80r 97 model. And have decided to take the plunge and update to a new KDJ150r.
I've been looking at a ZR firstly since it has similar specs to the Kakadu
And also been looking at a GXL for the storage space and extra fuel tank.

Now the tricky part is trying to decide on which one.
Both around the same $$$ with the GXL coming in cheaper at 62k drive away and the ZR coming in at 65k drive away. No haggle yet.
Im just after some advice on possibly the ZR vs GXL?
    Cheers all
    Looking for a prado.

My to bobs worth, Resale wise, IMO I reckon the GXL will be worth more in 5 years time.

Having my time again, I would have gone the GX just so I didn't have those bloody rear seats raising the floor so high, and
Spent the savings on Bar, Tyres, and a bit of aftermarket colour coding. Can't get in to the habit of using the reverse camera anyway.

If history means anything, it seems the old SWB pajeros are worth less than their wagon counterparts.

    Cheers

cheers bentas. Resale value was another point I have thought about. How do you find your GXL? any issues?

Apart from the bloody stupid rear seats, extremely happy. The best advice I can give is whatever the choice you make, take it directly to a tyre shop from delivery, and replace the tyres with proper ones, while the grand treks are still worth something. I've gone the Pirelli ATR's, with more of an on than off road tread pattern, and it is a completey different vehicle, especially in the wet. Overall, extremely happy. There are a few little niggles, but all have been ironed out. The worst been the vibration at 1500 revs. Had the air cleaner foam insert put in, and all good now.
You won't regret going the prado, especially at resale time, based on history.

Good idea mate  . did you just get the tyres changed over with a cash difference? or buy new ones and keep the old ones?

It seems quite a few people, most smarter than me, traded them in from new, and got a reasonable trade in price, and paid the difference for their new tyres. I'd done 13000 on mine, and had them refitted to my wifes Kluger, which is a lot lighter, and they seem ok, with the speedo slightly out. It seems a lot of people, that don't know any better, get the same tyres as original fitted when replacements are due. Hence it seems toyota probably pay snaff all for the original tyres fitted, but Dunlop make their money when dumb dumbs replace old with oem tyres. That's my scoop anyway !

Ive heard of a few people that traded em staight away for a off road tyre. I spoke to a guy the other day that got $100 each tyre. not sure if this is a good price.
I guess the 17'' rims would be easier to fit than 18'' for off road tyres.

What air cleaner foam insert? does this sort out the vibration at 1500 RPM?-Pls give me more info.

                  G'day Kavibaba,

I believe it goes between the aircleaner and the RHS panel, and stops the vibration.

My vibration has certainly gone since my dealer fixed it. As usual Toyota style, you can't just wander in the workshop and see what they are doing !

All the dealers should be across it by now !

                  Cheers

hi pedrodepacas we use our zr for towing a 2.5 ton van and it is fantastic, havent noticed any real skittish behaviour, and plenty of room in the back although probably best suited for 2 people as getting into the back seats is a bit awkward.you should be able to pick up a 2010 zr for around $60,000.

Thanks heaps Steve. Also mate, you wouldnt know why the zr has a 4 link rear end and the 5 doors have 5 link rear end (axles).
Wouldnt mind for a second hand one to come on the market soon. But they are too new for that now. Seen a SX 2nd hand. but the extra off road stuff like CRAWL and diff lock sound dam good!!!
                            Cheers pedro

as long as you also rememberthe NS Shortie Paj was also much cheaper than the closest LWB, mine is an R Spec @ $42K RRP versus $55K for the LWB in a similar spec. Since the shorties are no longer brought into Oz they have held their value.
