  • Rear Rattle - Kakadu

I have a V6 Kakadu and am plagued by a rattle in the rear, it appears to be coming from the 2nd or 3rd row seats but am not certain. I had it in at the local dealer for 2 days after which time they called be and told me they couldn't identify the source of the rattle, they had done everything they could think of without success and had now referred the matter to Toyota. They advised me this is a common problem in both the VX and Kakadu, both of which have electric folding rear seats and that Toyota were aware of the problem and working on a "fix". They also said that it varied from vehicle to vehicle.

I have written to Toyota asking them to confirm they are indeed working on a "fix" and asking for a time frame. Based on other posts I am not expecting much of an outcome. If they don't fix it I will sell the Kakadu and it will be the last in a long line of Toyota 4WD's that I have owned over the years.

Has anyone else had a similar problem? Was your dealer able to fix the problem?

    Re: Rear Rattle - Kakadu

I have a VX and I think it is coming from the 2nd row of seats, hit a bad bit of road and watch those things vibrate all over the place. I have replaced our 3rd row of electric seats with roller draws and the rattle is still there as I noticed it when we drove to our parents house yesterday. It is very annoying and it will be discussed again with Sci Fleet on the 10000km service in a couple of months.

I have the same rattle (gxl) and its coming from the passengers side 2nd row seat(the single seat)...Once someone sits on that seat the rattle disappears..also try having your third row seats up right not folded, this should keep rattles to the minimum... so much for a toyota...

Just got back from a 1000Km trip in my VX hauling a 2 tonne caravan, not a rattle at all, vehicle was so rattle free that I could listen to classical music at low volume with no problems,.....transmission was in S4 mode (sealed roads), and no passengers in rear seats.

Try your seat belt anchorages particularly those on the pillars....

I received a phone cal from my local dealer today asking if I can bring my Kakadu in on Thursday as Toyota have arranged for their West Australian Service Representative to visit the dealer to inspect my car and develop a strategy to fix the rattle. They have even arranged a loan car for the day so I wont be inconvenienced. Boy was I surprised given that it is less than 10 days since I wrote to Toyota Australia expressing my disappointment and was really expecting one of those "we are working on it" replies. Excellent service, lets hope they can find it and fix it.

Will provide an update after Thursday.

Update: Kakadu still with dealer who will keep it at least until Monday. Toyota have approved the dealer doing whatever is necessary to rectify the rattle. So far the main problem has been identified as a loose wiring harness behind the rear bumper. They removed the bumper, secured the harness and fitted some foam just to be sure. This only fixed about 80% of the problem. They now suspect either another loose harness under the floor or a loose baffle in the muffler, either way they are determined to track it down and sort it out for me. Whilst I am disappointed to be without the Prado I am impressed at the length Toyota and the dealer are prepared to go to in sorting out my problem. My dealer is New Town Toyota in East Victoria Park, WA. They have told me to keep the loan car until they can return the Prado free of rattles or vibrations.

I know that the 2nd row seats move about a bit over bumps but the noise I have had is much more than the seats moving. My rattle persisted even with passengers in the 2nd row. I tried everything to identify the source. Seats up, seats down, 3rd row seats up, down, even removed the luggage cover, all to no avail.

My vehicle had done almost 20,000km mainly on freeway with a small amount of gravel roads and no serious off road work.

New Update: Kakadu still with dealer, unable to locate source of additional rattle. Now considering stripping all interior trim, seats and carpets out of vehicle. They are determined to find and fix the problem. I am going away for 3 weeks tomorrow so have agreed to leave the vehicle with the dealer until I return. They have promised to send me text updates on their progress. Toyota coming out on Friday for another look with the dealer.

Whilst they acknowledge they have had similar problems with some diesels they do not have a history of this problem with petrol models. Anyway I am just happy that they are so willing to assist me with the problem and will hopefully fix it in my absence. No more updates until I return.

I found the source of the rattle in my car...its the second row seat on the passengers side...(small seat)..I looked around if I could do something about it but couldn't find anything..I will have to take it to the dealer and have them take apart the seat and put in some padding or something...

when driving over uneven concrete roads the seat wobbles around ALOT!! you should recommend then looking at that seat..

                    Re: Rear Rattle - Kakadu

Thanks jct0518, my rattle is definitely not coming from the 2nd row seats, these have been checked numerous times both loaded and unloaded. The noise appears to be coming from the floor or underneath the vehicle. The vehicle has been checked underneath and everything is tight. They currently suspect a loose wiring harness somewhere in the vehicle hence the proposal to strip the carpets etc to see if they can find something attached to the floor which could be causing the problem. The dealer has spent days checking all the obvious things with no success. I'm fortunate that both the dealer and Toyota are committed not only to solving the problem but also documenting it, photos are being taken and technical reports prepared for future reference. My vehicle was an early build so perhaps they didn't have the assembly procedures quite right.

The main rattle in the rear was caused where one of the rear wiring harnesses comes through the body, there is a block of foam insulation fitted to stop it rubbing on the body. Apparently this had not been fitted in the correct position at the factory hence the harness and connectors were touching the body causing a rattle.

                        Re: Rear Rattle - Kakadu

Got my Kakadu back yesterday after 4 weeks in the dealers workshop. The good news is that all of the rattles now appear to have been fixed, still have a slight vibration from the rear passenger side seat when going over sharp bumps but everyone appears to have that problem. Over the 4 weeks they spent more that 30 hours tracing and eliminating rattles. The main one was a loose wiring harness behind the back bumper, they also insulated a number of other wiring harnesses on the floor and replaced a gas strut, I think it must have been the one on the rear door. All up a pretty good outcome and I am now satisfied with the vehicle. The dealer has offered to send me a copy of the Warranty report which they prepare for Toyota, that should be interesting reading.

Whilst it has been a slow process I am impressed with the willingness of Toyota to get my car right, they were in constant contact with the dealer and drove the vehicle numerous times to try and assist the dealer, they also did the final drive and sign off before the vehicle was returned to me. I guess the message is to stand your ground and insist that you don't want the vehicle back unless it is fixed! It also helps to have a sympathetic dealer who is willing to go the extra mile.

Are you still rattle free. Our noise is more like a continuous thudding. Sound like the back door is about to fall off sometimes on corregated roads. It is very embarassing having people travel with us. Surely someone from Toyota reads & sees this forum , that there are many problems that owners would like fixed.I do not recomend to anyone to buy one .Beaut if you can always travel on the black tar.

I think you can safely say no one at Toyota has a job to read forum postings ..... or any other manufacturer of motor vehicles. Wouldn't it be great to read something on the lines 'your comments have been noted and we will do everything possible to investigate and resolve these issues - we are sorry for the ....etc etc....

I've never seen it .... they seem to work in their own cocoon of motor industry 'experts' where as we all know only the customers put the vehicles through their real paces. They may claim millions of miles of testing .... but a simple thing like the bloody mud flaps took customer to change - meanwhile I am still stuck with my stubby mud flaps on my 2009 build and have had no response from Toyota at all - not even an acknowledgement of my letter/complaint.
