  • Dobbo's D4D GX Build Up

Well, it's been almost a week since I brought the new car home, and I must say that I absolutely love it, so it's time to put together a bit of a build up to document the metamorphysis.
When I picked it up from the dealer it had been fitted with headlight and bonnet protectors, front weathershields and window tint.
Would have liked to tint to be a bit darker but I was told that was the darkest legal tint they could do.

Things have happened pretty quickly in the first week with the first stop being a visit to my friendly local tyre service and the original 6.5 inch alloys and Grandcrap tyres being discarded and a set of Speedy Avalanche 7.5 rims fitted and my BFG AT's that I had in my shed.

They also removed the spare wheel cover and backing plate which was a case of simply undoing 4 bolts and a plastic clip and it practically fell off.
Looks much better without it I think.

Next came a set of Sandgrabba mats all round cause I reckon they offer the best protection for the carpets.

Then it was off to Roof Rack City at Miranda to pick up a set of 6 Rhino Mounting Pads so I could fit my Rhino HD bars and roof basket, shovel holders as well as my ARB awning, in preparation for this years GTG.

Yesterday was spent installing my GME TX3400 remote head UHF.
I dis-assembled the centre console so that I could tap into the power to the 12volt socket and ran the power up under the dash to where I mounted the transponder to a bracket with a captive nut already on it. Plenty of room under there for it too.
Bolted the Z bracket for the aerial to an existing bolt next the the bonnet strut and once again it was too easy.Ran the lead through the rubber grommet which has the 2 little nipples on it which can be cut off, a bit of soldering on the end of the lead to reconnect the aerial plug and all was good.
Then I mounted the remote head with velco tape to the centre console next to my knee and that part was done. Just have to buy some double sided tape to mount the microphone on the little vertical trim piece.

I also installed my Scanguage during the week and there seems to be a discrepancy of about 2 litres per 100km from it and what the readout on the dash is telling me but that may change once I calibrate the Scanguage at the next fill.

Next things to come are the OME 2inch lift kit which won't be installed until after I get back from the GTG and the Toyota towbar that I managed to pick up off Ebay for $60.00. Pretty happy with that bargain as it looks pretty much new.
I'll add photos of this when it's all done.
    Dobbo.

Driving lights are going to have to wait a little while as I'll have to start saving up for a bullbar to mount them on.
Maybe next years tax return :P
Besides, I'm pretty happy with the standard lights as they are, much better than the 120's, but you can't beat HID's I reckon.

Re: Dobbo's D4D GX Build Up

At the end of the second week,I've added a few more accessories to the the truck.
Firstly, I had the towbar I picked up off Ebay for $60.00 installed by The 4WD Service Centre at Taren Point.
Had to buy the wiring harness which cost $143.00

I also had a set of Outback Ideas recovery points fitted.
I'm a bit p*ssed off with these as I was advised by the "company that sells these that they suit the 150 series, but they are actually for the 120 series and require you to elongate the holes to match the chassis holes in the 150, and in my opinion compromise the strength, nor do they reach down far enough so as not to damage the front apron in the event of a recovery. Hopefully I wont have to use them before I get round to having a bar fitted sometime in the future.

Whilst the boys at 4WD Service had the rear cargo area apart to fit the towbar, they also mounted the fridge power socket in the side trim for me.
Yesterday I fitted my Rhino basket and ARB awning in preparation for the GTG.

I also have to give a big recommendation to the boys at The 4WD Service Centre as they only charged me $269.00 to fit the towbar, recovery points & fridge socket, and this included the use of a hire car as my car was in overnight. I have no afilliation with them other than the fact that I have always taken my cars to them and their service has always been top notch.

I got the towbar for $60.00
Felt like a thief handing over the cash to the guy but I also noticed that he had a Pajero and a Forrester towbar for sale as well, and he got over $250.00 each for both of these.
I guess you just take your chances selling on Ebay.

You bet 8) Picked up my OME suspension kit on Wednesday and will fit the rear myself maybe next weekend and then have the front fitted by 4WD Service Centre on the Monday
Then I can start looking at a dual battery system and a cargo barrier.
At this rate I'm gonna have to get the wife to work a few more shifts

Re: Dobbo's D4D GX Build Up

Dobbo, the mods on these things can be a bit costly My GX had 10G spent on it in the first four weeks (8G in the first week). I looked at fitting my Scangauge on top of the steering wheel but it looked to tacky so I drilled a hole in the side of the storage box in the consol and mounted it with velcro tape there. the sunnies and fuel recipts still fit and I can see what my co-driver is up to when I am in the passenger seat. The spare cable is in the box coiled up so I can have a good play with the gauge whilst being a poor passenger. When you close the box, all is standard again. On the accuracy of the scangauge, Last week I fueled up after 1070 kms (670 with a van) and it took 142 litres. The scangauge said it would have 7.4 litres left. That is impressive.

Re: Dobbo's D4D GX Build Up

Last Saturday I spent a couple of hours fitting the OME Nitrochager Sport shocks and OME coils to the rear of my car. No real problems with that and all went smoothly
Then on Monday morning I dropped it in to 4WD Service Centre to have the front done and 11/2 hours and $135.00 later it came out looking like this:

And here is a before shot for comparison.

I didn't take any before and after measurements as I clean forgot ops: but I'm veryb happy with the gained height and the handling of the car.
The wife hasn't driven it yet so I don't think she's aware that it's been lifted
Just have to arrange a wheel alignment now and I can start thinking about the next mod, which will most likely be a dual battery system.
