  • Going from 120 to 150

I received my 150 GXL this week, after owning a 120 D4D VX for 3 years and 104,000km.

The 120 was a great car, except I had the noisy injector problem fixed at 60,000, and the fuel consumption went south from that moment. It actually kept improving very slightly, but it was never the same.

The main complaints I had about the 120 was my wife and I found the seats uncomfortable at times, it steered like a boat, and the Grandcraps were dangerous in wet clay. That was it. Very happy ownership experience, but I have no idea how much it cost to service over that time.

Because of my car allowance (company car), I had two choices:- 150 VX with no options and whinging kids on long trips, or 150 GXL and rear entertainment unit. I chose the latter, and added the factory bullbar, dual batteries, Cargo Barrier and UHF as options and still came in thousands less than the allowance.

Thoughts so far? The 150 steering is so much better than the 120, the dash is a lot classier, and what a lovely steering wheel to hold. The seats (so far) seem a hell of a lot more comfortable and I don't really miss the leather (until I have to clean them). Gadgets abound are cool, like bluetooth connectivity is so much better, trip computers (but why two screens?), keyless entry, and the rear camera is a lot more useful than I expected. The Alpline rear entertainment unit is a beauty and the kids love it. The car seems quieter and more refined than the 120.

Bad? Audio quality isn't flash and nowhere near the old VX, the fuel tank is smaller, and then there is the boot. What have they done? Why?

I can understand why the VX and Kakadu have a power third row seat. It is a pain to get back there to pull the seat bases up, and there is no where to put the luggage cover so it has been permanently removed and stored in the shed for the next three years. The cargo mat has no holes in it for the tie down hooks, and doesn't fit in properly when the cargo barrier is in. The cargo barrier steals a bit of boot space.

I haven't given the car a good flogging yet to see how it goes or how it tows.

    Congrats on the upgrade.
I hope you have a lot of happy family fun in the new 150.
They really are a great car. I went from the 90 series to the 150 and have never looked back.
