Yes low range and I always hit the 2nd start. As for selection of gears, in 'S' mode it is up to the selected gear as stated. This is a bit of a shame as you are always starting in second when third is usually better. Put it in AUTO when climbing as it changes quicker to keep the revs at 1800 to 2300 generally instead of over 2500 in 'S' mode. Very capable up hill and down dale driven like this. Now I find this interesting, I change gears two to three times more often in the Prado D4D Auto than the manual 100 series.

I was a manual man through and through, until I got stuck in brissy traffic in my 90 series!!! They have a fairly light clutch, my 120 is beautiful I love my auto, so very lazy and really good offroad, never need to worry about the correct gear, riding the clutch etc. auto all the way for me
I have also driven the 150auto and it's a nice unit.2008 120 Series 3lt D4D TD Prado GX, With to many bits to list :-) and more to come!!

I just got a new Prado and when comparing it to the two year old one, the auto shift points have been improved dramatically.
Suggest you get your auto reflashed or whatever at the next service.
Has eliminated the lag and is a much better drive.stepped up the a 200 LC for towing,

Yes I have had the flash done and Toyota did get it right in the end. The transmission is sweet now and I usually drive it in auto on the black stuff now. I am very happy with it and would not swap it for anything I have driven and I am not looking either. I was just pointing out that in steep country you need auto going up and 'S' going down. 'S' mode going up tends to over rev.Prado Polar White 150 GX 3.0 TD Auto. Its a rediculous setup. We are not all incompetent drivers Toyota! There are times when I want 2000 rpm for a given speed, not 1500 or 2500. Let me decide!

The sports mode also eliminates the flat spot at intersections and vastly reduces the time the auto spends out of tc lockup (this will reduce overheating). Do drive with a light touch of the thottle though, these things are rockets otherwise and you will blow your fuel savings as well. As the development of the 150 was completed during the financial crisis for Toyota, I would suggest that the auto is mapped for the 4.0 petrol motor only as a cost saving. Can someone with a petrol auto and a scanguage confirm that the box does or does not work well with the petrol motor? Does anyone know if or when a firmware update will be available for the auto? In the Ford Falcon when you use the sequential selector the box stays in full manual mode until auto is selected again. This would be great in the Prado when in low range particually in hilly terain. I use the second gear start but the Prado insists on revving over 2300 before changing to third, this is usually after the humpty on a climb and the last thing you need is a gear change with revs on a slippery up-slope. The only option to avoid this is to place the trans in second and drive slowly but this can leave you momentum poor and holding up others.
