Don't use one but did consider getting one previously but decided on a platform rack instead.
Roof pods are great for smaller bags, sleeping bags and smallish items. They are good for keeping the weather off and are great for people who just want to chuck things up there and drive off.
Some people will find and alloy tray or platform more practical because they tend to carry larger items. However, you need to take the time to make sure that things are strapped down properly and is in a weatherproof case, or the items don't mind getting wet.
A friend of ours gave us a couple of old 'samsonite' style suitcases. It has a thin hardcase shell and very lightweight which is perfect for keeping the weight down on the roof.
We use one and have just upgraded from our first, it was a Rola 360 litre (on sale at Repco 25% off until tomorrow 22/12, catalogue item)
It was great, very easy to use and suited our needs, all our light bulky things went into it, clothes bags, sleeping bags, food, fold up chairs and a fold up table.
Everything stays dry and easy to get to.
No good for heavy items, like gas bottles or spare wheels.
We have just bought the Rola 450 litre (on sale as above) it's long enough to fit our tent, a Black Wolf Turbo Lite Plus 300 and our fold out Gazebo.
My 12 yo son and I get the pod on or off in about 10 minutes.
They are a pain to store when not in use as they are big.
