  • Reverse sensor failure?!?

A tragedy has occurred. My beautiful car has been wounded. I was sitting in my house having a chat with my mate who i hadn't seen in a month and my wife says she's going to take our daughter down to a playground and that she'd take my car instead of hers. Fair enough i thought - mi prado su prado - and i thought nothing more of it... until i heard a nasty crunching noise come from the font of the house. I looked out the window and saw that my dearest had reversed out of the garage and into the side of my friends car. End result is a dented panel, scratched paintwork and busted rear light assembly for him and a buckled rear bumper for me.
Wifey has come back inside to confess and has straight up said that she never heard the reverse sensor beeping. I have heard owners of other makes say that their reverse sensors don't work in the rain, and it was bucketing down at the time. Has anyone else had this problem, or is it an "isolated incident?"

P.S. I thought it best to bite my tongue and not point out that the car is fitted with a reverse camera, two bloody big side mirrors and what happened to using the Mk1 eyeball?

Are you asking if the reversing sensor failure or the wife crashing the car is the isolated incident?

      Re: Reverse sensor failure?!?

My sensor hasn't worked since I picked it up last week. Also looking for a solution as we are traveling on holidays at the moment and can't book the car in without a 1 week wait at the moment. When I push the button to turn on the sensor it just gives heaps of beeps until the beeps stop and the sensor lights stay on.

      Any ideas?

Sorry to hear of your tragedy! Adds insult to injury if you were following the cricket at the time.

        Re: Reverse sensor failure?!?

Funny you say this, my wife reversed into a concrete bollard at the local shopping center the other day resulting in a new rear door needed for our Prado :-(

She said the parking sensors never went off. I later tried reversing into a railing and got within a few CM of it before the sensors actually started beeping. Even at the shopping center today reversing into car parks, the sensors didnt pick up the car behind until i was almost on top of it.

Ill take it down to Toyota in the new year and get them to check it out and watch them roll out the excuses thick and fast. Be interested to see how many other 150 owners are reporting reverse parking sensor problems.

          Reverse sensor failure?!?

I think the moral of this story is to check behind before reversing. The sensors are really only a parking aid, not a substitute for using mirrors and cameras

Having said that, they should work.

is the sensor turned on, isn`t there a button P above your left knee that turns it off?
My wife has revered into the post on the gate, she didn`t use mirrors just used reversing camera and didn`t appreciate how close she was to the post.

That is similar to what i told her. Nothing beats using your own eyes. We're all taught to check our blind spot by looking over our shoulder, but this basic tennet seems to be forgotten when you get in a car filled with gadgets.

The sensor was on. I don't think we've got that button. My parking sensor control is on the steering wheel menu buttons.

I am in fact relieved it was a car she hit. I shudder to think what the result would have been if it had been our little girl.
