  • Water in cabin.

I have been 4wd'ing for a number of years now but have never had the opportunity to do a serious water crossing until last weekend..... There was a muddy water hole with a big dip in the middle with a reasonably firm base. I watched a couple of other 4wd's come through with no worries although the water was over the bonnet of both of them in the middle of the hole. After deciding on the same line as the others it was up with the windows and away we go. The Kakadu powered faultlessly through the hole never missing a beat but as I am sure some of you more experienced boys will know already water poured in through the fan behind the glovebox. Needless to say the missus was not too impressed at getting wet feet and having no AC! Every other vehicle that came through seemed fine. Is this a problem with the 150 or did I make some stupid mistake? The fan started working again the next day after drying it out and when I did the return journey (only way) I had it on recirculate but with the same result. Does this mean I can never go through really deep water or is there a solution? ops:

          Re: Water in cabin.

where does the cabin filter behind the glove box draw its air from. I am assuming the 150 and 120 would be somewhat similar.

            Water in cabin.

Silvo will know the answer to this. Pretty sure it's from the base of the windscreen though.

              Hi Clownfish

Had the same problem on the weekend, water over the bonnet then i (as passenger) got my feet wet from behind the glovebox

But it also locked L4 in & a few other disturbing lights flashing at me at the start of a 300km trip home at 7pm. Luckily after a few pit stops to check the car & to try get it back into H4, it clunked back into gear & the lights just magically disapeared.

I've got absolutely no mods at all so we must be one of the unlucky ones to have this water feature

                Re: Water in cabin.

yep - i've had that issue.. on a 2 day old car.. but a LOT more water than you had..

toyota wasn't very helpful to me, as you've gone above the 600mm (or700mm - i can't remember now) wading depth.

in my case, i had water up over the windscreen.. the vents just below the windscreen will accept bits of water, but not a large amount. i told my toyota dealership i would come down and throw buckets of water on the bonnets and "let's see what happens"

in reality (after i have calmed down), water at any sort of speed like that is likely to enter the vehicle under pressure. in my case, having climate control on helped to push water through the air system.

i pulled everything apart, dried it all out, then let it sit for a few days before turning it back on, i've not had any problems since.

also, just check inside the centre console, and under the driver and passenger's seats in case water got up there. you will want to pull the trim off and dry it all up from under the carpet otherwise it may start to stink if it was muddy stagnant water.

I've never heard of water entry being an issue with the 120. I've had mine in water over the bonnet numerous times.
It would seem there is something that Mr Toyota has changed on the 150.

maybe the sealing in the 150 fan box is just worse? have you ever seen any water marks on your cabin filter?

Were you using a blind during the crossing?

                          Water in cabin.

We crossed the Thompson at Walhalla on the weekend. Nowhere near over the bonnet but I took some gaffa tape in case it was. Looks simple enough to tape the vents at the bottom of the windscreen as part of your 'deep crossing' preparation to prevent this.

                            Re: Water in cabin.

no blind in my attempt, but that would be the first thing i would do differently if i were to attack water that deep again, also, i went WAY to quick as well, so the water wave went straight up and onto the bonnet.

Yeah the blind should keep an air pocket in the engine bay provided you keep the same momentum. Can't really avoid water in the vents if it goes up the bonnet and into the plenum, taping up the vents and recirc could reduce it.
