Went camping for a night up at Wombeyan Caves last week, turn off at Mittagong onto the Wombeyan Caves road, sealed for about 15 or k's then turns to dirt (just before the famous tunnel through the rock), from there it's a winding OK but fairly potholed 30 k's to Wollondilly River Station (where you can bush camp with dogs etc by the river), didn't fancy swimming but kids were having a ball on lilos etc, then another 15 k's on a much more winding rutted road to Wombeyan where we camped for the night, they supplied firewood (might be worth taking a log splitter next time), $30 for a family in a tent, no generators, nice and peaceful on good flat grass and lots and lots and lots of kangaroos wandering around. We did a self guided tour through the 600m long Figtree Cave - there are guided tours through bigger caves as well. Well worth going through Figtree at least. Also there's a swimming hole about 30mins walk away, but it was hot and hilly and my little ones wouldn't make the trek! Nice spot for two nights I reckon.
The road is very narrow and high in mountainous (OK very very hilly) terrain, blind corners abound, careful driving is the order of the day and in the wet the road would be 4wd only. There are some big holes and I passed a falcon scraping its way uncomfortably along at less than half my pace. Lots of softroaders out there - this sort of road is fine for them but would recommend clearance for a comfortable trip.
Prado went like a dream - no complaints. Did use more diesel than usual though. Also it has some rims on the inside of the wheel arches which caught a lot of dirt, nice rust magnets if not cleaned out.
From there you can get to the back of the Blue Mountains and the jenolan caves and back to Sydney on the freeway - this is probably one of the best 4wd trips around Sydney for us urbanites.
Mittagong is worth a wander around too - beautiful at the moment in the southern highlands.
Adios amigos.
