  • VMS touring 600 failure

Hi guys. This is my first post so I might need some help/tips.
I just bought one of the new VMS Touring 600 GPS. It worked fine for a little while but seems to have died. I have tried recharging the unit. A green button comes on next to the power cable but when I try to power up the unit it won't turn on and the green light changes to red. If I don't have the unit plugged in, then the light goes off altogether. I have tried pressing the reset button but that hasn't worked.
I wonder if it is the battery, but don't know if I can get a new battery, and anyway I am a bit suss about a battery burning out completely after such a short time. Also there is the issue of dismantling the unit and perhaps voiding the warranty.
This just happened in the middle of Easter a few days ago. Of course everything is closed at the moment. I am in Adelaide and was hoping to hit the road first thing on Tuesday but it's starting to look like I might need to hang around a bit longer to have a chat with the VMS guys in Melbourne before I go.
Anyone else have a similar problem or have any suggestions for me?
    Cheers and thanks.

Doug I have had the same issue with an older VMS gps... I think they have issues as mine died exactly the same way !

I fixed the issues by purchasing a Garmin.

and I wouldn't crack the unit open if it's still under warranty.

I've received a replacement unit from VMS. It seems to be working fine, and it is a really nice unit to use. VMS were excellent in their customer service, sending a new unit out to me within a few days of receiving my broken unit, via their dealer in Broken Hill. I hope that this solves the problem as I was keen to support an Aussie manufacturer. I'll keep you posted ...

Well, back home again after a four month road trip. The replacement unit (Touring 600) worked well from Broken Hill until just before we got back to Melbourne to catch the boat home to Tassie. While on Phillip Island the unit decided that "Navione is not a valid Windows application" or something like that. Basically, the unit wouldn't operate. Well, we used a phone to find our way to VMS headquarters in Melbourne and Michael Williams sorted the problem out for us in minutes. Hopefully all the problems are behind us, as we really like the unit with its big, bright glare-free screen and the different off-road software options. And I'd never leave home again without a GPS: it made finding friends and getting in and out of those big mainland cities a breeze! ;-)
          Cheers

Thanks for that Doug, it's great to read that their (VMS) support is good because I have the Touring 600 as well, with no problems encountered so far.

            Cheers
