Ive had it up Stockton and on the beach near Forster, no probs at all. I have done a lot of beach driving for over 20 years in a variety of 4wds and this is as good if not better than Ive had on the beach.

Thanks for that.Yeah, all my own stuff. I have a little GoPro HD video camera which attaches to anywhere on the outside of the vehicle. Awesome for shooting 4wding!

P.S. I didn't mean to hijack this thread with my blog. Just trying to point to an example of traction control vs no traction control

Have now had our VX TD for 2 weeks and have tested the TC on a steepish gravel/rock hill with wombat holes and a turn near the top. Have done the same in a late model 120 V6 and Ranger with aired down KM2s and locked rear diff-both needed plenty of momentum to pass. Have now done this section twice in the 150 including yesterday where I went as slow as possible and it did it easily with the Grandtrecks and highway pressures. I won't delete the lockers from my list yet until I've had a chance to test the TC in good old Tassie West Coast mud-this won't be happening until fitting of barwork, suspension, decent tyres and a winch-which winch???? Decisions, decisions.

A 120 series Prado Grande demonstrates how good traction control is:

How not to do it in a Landrover Defender, nice save though:

Along the Canning last month I turned the TC off most of the time for dunes (the other times I just forgot) - at times getting over a soft, steep dune is about momentum so you don't want any wheel braking, especially if you find yourself just creeping over the crest with wheels spinning. It can be the difference between making it over and not. A couple of times when I was going over in high range, and there was a sharp turn at the crest of the dune, the stability control kicked in as well. I don't think this caused any problems it was just unexpected so I got a bit of a surprise at the noise.

Still trying to figure out the T/C and the VSC. Towed an off road trailer with 2 quads on the weekend for over 180kms on soft sand, mud, ruts etc. The first time the T/C kicked in I got stuck well and truly on some soft sand uphill. Bellied out completely and had to be snatched out. The 120 used to eat up that section with no TC....So after pressing the button and playing around with it a bit I figured it was best to disengade the T/C and VSC by holding the button down for 3 seconds for all the sand sections.
The mud sections pulled through ok with it on. Maybe someone with more experience with this can lend some advice .
                cheers

So from reading through this thread... would the following be a fair assesment of the best plan of attack:

Soft Sand - Traction Control Off
Everything Else - Traction Control On

                  ???

I reckon you'd have to be going VERY hardcore to justify the expense of front and rear lockers for the amount of times they'd be needed above and beyond traction control.

Is the 120 and 150 traction control the same?

Mate Rob likes to 'go hard' from what I hear anyway...

Having had TC on a ahem nissan and now locker on the Prado i think they both have their place.
Certainly no good in sand with TC and particularly VSC but then again the 120 does seem to eat up the beach sand.

I often read things about "justifying the expense" sure if funds are tight then it would be very hard to justify, if however 3k for a couple of lockers is chump change for someone; then justifying it isn't that hard. Goes for every mod, no way on earth I could justify Kakadu money when you could get a GX, but plenty of others do.

                          Cheers Andrew

Lockers are easily justifiable (if you have no TRC). Just find some uneven terrain to get your wheels in the air and put your foot flat the floor until your crown wheel (or spider gears in the front of a 90) fail(s).

                            Expense justified

Does the TC and VSC work the same in the 150 as the 120? Engage the centre diff lock and VSC is off but TC is on.
