  • Adding Steering Wheel Controls To Prado 150 GX

Does any one know if it is possible to add steering wheel control to the GX.

Is the only difference that Toyota have not installed the buttons on the wheel and the wiring looms behind are the same as the GLX ?

    Downunder,
Did you have any joy with the steering wheel control switch upgrade?
There is an e-bay seller from japan (Zeroism) selling the switches for the steering wheel (150 GX RHD)for $230.00 $au.
Let me know if it works out.

    Cheers

    Peter

Thanks for that, that price looks reasoable compares to what we will get charges in australia. Now all i need to find out if the wiring harness is the same in the GX and GXL + models.

Well the replacement on the steering wheel looks easy after removing the air bag, but the hard part will be at the bottom of the steering wheel trying to find the 3 wires we need to take to the stereo. The electrical manual is very hard to find out the exact info.

Check out this, these PDF's should be a good starting point:

Thanks ryzz I have the same Manual, the issue is I know it goes in on Z8 , but I do not know the pin out and where it comes out at the bottom of the steering wheel. The wiring diagram does not show or I am missing something ?.

I am also working on this little project. Progress so far - installed switches - the easy bit !

Problem encountered - the mechanism that connects the airbag, horn and steering wheel switches to the fixed wiring under the dash is variously called a spiral cable assembly or a clockspring. Its behind the steering wheel and you have to pull the wheel to remove it. Its actually a snap on/off part of the combination light and indicator switch assembly.

The GX version of the clockspring has two connectors, for the airbag and horn, whereas the GXL version (and presumably higher spec versions) have three connectors - airbag, horn and steering wheel controls.

Now it starts to get really scary. Toyota want $1200 for a clockspring for a GXL so you can forget that ! It is possible to buy them from the US on ebay for around $500, but that is also a bit rich - and you have to be absolutely sure of the required part number.

I have been looking for one from a wrecker - problem there is that the clockspring is easily damaged, and something like an airbag going off can apparently fracture the cables. I have one on the bench which seems to have that problem - the airbag connections are faulty.

So, good luck with this one - I'll update if there is any further progress to report.

Do you have photos of this ?

I thought this was similar to the 120 series, the cables to the bottom of the steering wheel being the same. I have not changed start red the changeover yet as other things creeping me busy, I am also changing the steering wheel. If you took some photos that would be great

I had a look at Toyodiy and there is two different cable assemblies. Based on your post then the GX must have 84307‑60020 ?

                          84306 CABLE SUB-ASSY, SPIRAL
                          84307‑47020 VX PACKAGE & PRECRASH SYSTEM-WITH(PRE-CRASH SEAT BELT & PRE-CRASH BRAKE ASSIST & PRE-CRASH BRAKE) & CRUISE CONTROL-WITH (MILLIMETER WAVE RADAR CRUISE) & SRS AIR BAG-W(DRIVER SEAT & PASSENGER SEAT & KNEE & CURTAIN(RR NO.1 & NO.2 SEAT)) & AUDIO-NAVIGATION+DVD CHANGER+BLUETOOTH+14SP & BACK MONITOR-WITH(WITH/GUIDE & AROUND MONITOR)

                          84307‑60020 = possibly in GX ?

Apologies for the slow response - a bit busy with work. Yes the GX has a 84307-60020 clockspring and the GXL has the 84307-47020. The only physical difference I'm aware of is that the GXL version has the extra connector on the steering wheel side that we need to plug in the steering wheel switches.

I successfully installed a 84307-47020 so I know the connectors fit, but it is faulty and gave an airbag alarm light and no horn. I then tested it on the bench as per the test procedure in the manual and it fails the test.

I will post a picture or two shortly.

Well I bought one from Japan. Have been to busy at work to try to fit it. How hard is it to replace. Do you need to disconnect battery to pull front SW air bag off.
