  • Increasing towing capacity

    Hi All,
This is my first post, so I hope I've put this in the right area to get the right response.
I am looking to buy a bigger van with an ATM of around 3 tonne. I don't want to get rid of my 2011 D4D.
Does anyone if it is possible to increase the towing capacity, and if it can be done what modifications need to be done.

As I said I would rather spend a few grand than get trade mine in.

Thanks in advance for any usefull info

I think you'll struggle to get a GCM upgrade to be honest.

Not an easy thing to do especially after first registration.

If you can find a way to legaly do the upgrade, you would be pushing the vehicle very close to or over its design limits. You don't want instability or reliability problems so you will have to look at the van upgrade as a vehicle/van upgrade or look for a lighter van that will do the job.

Gee I wish you could even just 200kg would be enough.I just got back from the Leisurefest and was amazed that if I want a family van with an ensuite it pushes me over my limit.

I would honestly think that the 120 series would not be a more capable tow vehicle than the 150 but tow rating suggest they are?

it does seem stupid that in the UK for example the 5 door is rated to 3000kg, but here with extra fuel tank it drops to 2500. It would be nice if Toyota had been able to raise the tow capacity to 2700kg.
stepped up the a 200 LC for towing,
but had a 2012 and 2010 150 Prado GXL auto diesel in Graphite with Bridgestone D697 A/T. Dobinson C59-300/325 and Bilsteins. Accessories : two baby seats. Sidewinder`s Dual Battery isolator and rear power outlet kit. Pirana Battery tray, Hayman Reese towbar with Toyota wiring kit and Brains`s guard.

It is possible, but only before the first registration. I have spoke to Tough Dog about this very question.

The Prado CAN do it, but Toyota Aus wont rubber stamp it as it would remove market share from the 200LC..
            IMHO...

If that was the case here I'd get a new 150 instead of a 200

Quickly, you saw the way my chipped 120 performed. The 150's are almost as capable ;p

You might want to try contacting Creative Conversions in SEQld they have been successful n doing GVM upgrades.

What amazes me is how they rate dual cab utes with similar mechanical setupd as the 150. Toyota will never rate s Prado any higher when they can force people into 200 series cruisers at 25k more.
