  • Long Range Fuel Tank

I fitted the 136 litre Long Range Automotive (LRA) replacement rear tank. I had one in my old 2009 Prado and when I picked up my new one (2013) I had the long range tank fitted by someone as it was rather hard work. If you like fiddling then go for it.

The rear tank is removed, brackets cut out, new bracket fitted and the tank replaced. The whole process took about 3 hours.

This gives me the 87 litres from the front tank and an additional 136 from the rear or a total of 223 litres.

I found the fuel gauge remains at full and does not move until you get about 150 litres of fuel remaining. Then the gauge reads as it did with the factory rear tank. That is when the gauge shows half a tank you have about 75 litres remaining. the fuel warning light comes on with about 10 litres remaining in the tank as it did prior to fitting.

The computer appears to think the tank is full until you get below 150 litres then it reads reasonably accurately. I found this rather interesting because the computer is way off when it comes to fuel economy.

Each time I restart the motor the 'oh what a feeling' computer updates the distance to empty. It was showing about 500kms to empty, I stopped for lunch and when we restarted it showed 750kms to empty. It appears to update the DTE each time you restart the motor.

Drove from Brisbane to Cairns (two drivers) without switching it off and the 'oh what a feeling' went to zero on the distance remaining but the tank was just under half full (on the gauge).

The angles are not changed so the new tank wont affect you exiting rough spots.

I will take some photo's and post these if anyone is interested.

May be that the sender unit in the petrol tank cannot recognise the difference, unless the installer fitted a new sender unit. So long as the gauge is reading correctly down the bottom end of the dial, when the tank is nearing empty.

        Random question, was your 2009 a 120 or a 150?

I have the long ranger tank in my 2009 GXL and according to the manufacturer they recoomend the factroy sender and yes it will not read correctly at all, as for the best read out thay can give is, " when the fuel light come's on in a standred tank you have about 12l of fuel left but with the new tank you will have about 17l"

with having a snoop around the forums i am going to buy a scangauge and with the menu on this you should be able work out with the trip computer fun

Pics please. Always wondered how the gauge/trip computer would handle the capacity increase.

            Thanks for posting.

Will take some picks and post them. The tank used the OEM sender and yes, it is not accurate until you are down to about 150 litres remaining. Then the 'oh what a feeling' gauge / trip computer seems to read what it was with the factory tanks. It is interesting that the fuel gauge shows full until you start using the last 150 litres then the gauge reads accurate. ie Gauge shows half a tank and you have 75 litres of fuel remaining. gauge shows quarter and you have about 35 litres remaining and when the fuel light comes on you have about 10 litres left.

Fill after the fuel light came on (then travelled another 50kms):
