  • Increasing the Towing Capacity of the 150 Series

The Prado only has a Towing Capacity rating of 2500kgs. I'm in the market for an off-road van and most weigh closer to 3000kg. I've heard that other vehicles have had modifications made to increase the legal towing capacity. Does anyone have any information regarding how to do this ?

            Cheers,
Thanks rvator2 ... That information was exactly what I was after !!! I'll be looking straight into having my 150 Series GXL rated to 3000kgs and increasing the drawbar weight to 300kgs. Might require a trip down to Beresfield, NSW, if I can't find somewhere closer to Brisbane, but it may be worth the trip. Good find, thanks.

Andrew, thanks for the link. Rvator mentioned the same link and it's exactly what I was after. Will be looking straight into increasing the towing capacity to 3000kgs with a ball weight of 300kgs. Thanks again ... Wayne

Check it is legal here before you commit to anything. I suspect you are going to be disappointed.

Legal in the state of registration is the key

So you'd be happy with the tail wagging the dog in an emergency situation? 3T van towed by a 2T car, you work out the physics.

It's pretty common for trailers to be heavier than tow vehicles these days, I would rather three tonne behind a Prado than some of the dual cabs with even higher towing capacities.

One truck running around here with a GVM of 23 tonne tows a trailer that is legal at 39.5 tonne, it's a dog trailer as well so no drawbar weight on the truck!

                        Cheers Andrew

2 tonne would also be the lightest Prado in the world, most would be nudging 3 tonne with a couple of people in them, fuel, maybe a bullbar and a bit of gear.

                          Cheers Andrew

True, I'd still prefer to tow with something bigger. We also know lots of diesel 150s go bang towing...
