  • Dynamat for road/wind noise

    Hi all,
What are peoples opinions on using Dynamat to reduce road/wind noise? I know the 150 is a quiet vehicle to start off with but it can always be made quieter.
I've noticed I'm getting a lot of noise from my ARB roof rack and a bit of increased noise from the back since I put drawers in.
I've already bought a bulk pack and have done the left rear wheel arch up to the window and the floor pan of the back area and have used 3 of the 9 sheets in the pack.
Has anyone else done this to their car? How pedantic should I get about 100% coverage, getting about 70-80% at the moment.
    Cheers

When you added the rear drawers, did you remove the 3rd row seats?

Yes I did. Increased the noise for sure. What my plan for that is the dynamat on the floor and stick some 'acoustic pinboard' to the underside of the false floor that Drifta provides

Yes that would be a good idea.

Have you, or anyone else done it to the roof for wind noise?

I have the same issues, Rear Draws and Roof Rack. Please keep me in the loop when its done. Would love to know if you recommend it.

What roof rack are you running? I would be trying to eliminate the wind noise generated before trying to insulate it out. Any unfilled slots or holes in the roof rack can be a source for wind noise, especially those running across the car.

Jimmy mentioned that it was an ARB rack. The one with the mesh would be a bit noisy. The numerous cross bars would generate some noise also.

Timely thread as I was just looking at some of this last might, not for the Prado though.

So back to the original question, has anyone used it and was it worthwhile?

                    Cheers Andrew

Sorry, must of missed that. I would still be trying to eliminate the wind noise though, have you got anything on the rack permanently? I have heard some horrific wind noise on some racks, put some weight in them and a fair bit of it goes. Just stuff like a shovel, axe and max tracks to stop the mesh vibrating. A friends Pootrol with the powerful rack was dreadful until we did that.

AJ, I have only heard good things about it for sound deadening, but there are some cheaper cost brands around that do the same or better job for less coin. Have a search around on car audio forums or RanJ might know of the ones

                        Apologies about the late reply.
I have an ARB 3/4 steel rack with the mesh (the type that is the 2 inch squares or so). Most noise seems to come from the roof at highway speeds and at regular road speeds it an all round kind of general road noise.
I have nothing permanently on the rack except the ARB quick grip shovel holders and a 2 small light bars pointing sideways (see my build thread for what i mean).
So over the last coupe of days i pulled all the rear out of the car right down to the metal. Dynamatted the rear quarters to about 50% coverage, wheel arches to 100% coverage and floor pan to about 90%. I then put some acoustic foam on the underside of the drawers. Can't work out how to get the plastic trim off the rear door. Any ideas?
At this stage I'd say no noticeable reduction in road noise (wasn't expecting any) but when going over bumps the rear suspension is noticeably quieter so in theory on corrugations it should help. I have 3 sheets of dynamat left so i might do the drivers door today, i hear a lot of road noise reduction comes from that.
I paid $177 delivered for a bulk pack from ebay which is apparently a very good price.
Keep you guys posted on the progress

I sort of assumed you couldn't go wrong, I have seen a few different versions on Ebay, just a matter of picking one and giving it a whirl.

                          Cheers Andrew

From my readings there are 2 main types Butyl backed and Asphalt backed. Don't get the Asphalt stuff, its smelly, doesn't react to heat well, etc etc.
I did the 2 front doors in 40 mins yesterday. Prado's have some of the easiest door cards ever to take off.
Slightly quieter in the car now and the doors now close with a deep thud. According to the phone db meter (I know it's not entirely accurate but close enough) it's showing a 2 or so db drop in the car.
From the 9 sheet bulk pack I still have 2 3/4 sheets left over to do the back doors. Each front door took 1 1/4 sheet to get about 90% coverage

From memory, every 3dB is half the volume. so a 2dB drop is pretty good. Did you get the Dynamat Xtreme? From their website, it looks like they appy it to the door frame rather than the door skin. I guess the door frame is much easier to apply to. Is that what you did also?
