My wife and I are getting ready for a trip to the Kimberly over this winter. I have removed the 2nd row or middle row seats from my Prado GX 150 series ready for installing a flat platform / false floor. The idea is that my fridge and esky will sit behind the drivers seat leaving plenty of space for drawers at the rear. A boab footwell water tank may also be included. I am ready to start designing the false floor but I imagine lot of people have already done this. I would be very interested to hear from you if you have removed your middle row seats. Please let me know how you used the space and if you fitted a false floor.

Removing the middle row seats.

Remove in the following order. Install in opposite order.
1. Remove covers over bolts on floor ( I used a wide blunt chisel and they popped off easily..
2. Remove bolts from floors and take out bottom seats.
3. Remove angled flap at back of back-rests (10mm).
4. Remove bolts holding back rest on the floor.
5. Open the flap at the rear of the backrests and remove bolts attaching seat to the bracket which itself attaches to the pillar.
6. Wriggle out the driver’s side double back rest 1st then the passenger’s side back rest. Try to minimise scratching of the plastic between the double and single backrests. The bracket holding the double backrest appears more open and should be slightly easier than the single which is why I removed it first.
7. Remove the bolts into the pillars on both sides (12mm).
8. Remove the seat belt catch from the floor.

Hello halfpastfour
Sorry for the delay in replying we got back last Friday from a 7 week trip from Perth through the Kimberley and back. As there were just the 2 of us travelling we didn't need the 2nd row of seats and removing them gave us a lot of room. I have a GX so there were no 3rd row seats to remove. I fitted a 12mm ply false floor from the cargo area to the foot well. I didn't extend the false floor into the footwell area because you loose too much space. I mounted fridge, esky, 4 x 5L water containers and extra food storage bins on the false floor. In the cargo area I installed 2 sets of Drifta double drawers ie 4 drawers in total with a total height of 525mm. This setup gave us plenty of storage space and everything was readily accessible. As a result we didn't need to tow anything and slept in a tent for 6 of the 7 weeks only staying in cabins for the southerly parts of the trip.
Hope this helps. Cheers.
