  • Dog Cage in Rear Cargo Area

Has anyone fitted a cage into the rear of their prado for Fido?
Our dog currently gets chained up and can roam around the entire cargo area when we travel. This wont work when we want to take the fridge or go camping.
If not a cage, how do you keep your pup safe when travelling with a loaded vehicle?

We only have a relatively small cocker spaniel. He sits on a blanket on the back set but is secure with a very short leash which clips into one of the seat belt latches.

Think I bought it from Pet World.

After our last holiday it took forever to get dog hair out of our Prado so I decided that when travelling with dogs the fridge goes on the back seat, strapped in.
The dogs go in the back cargo area. I have one of Tin's half height cargo barriers which keeps the dogs in the back. Because Toyota use a special carpet magnetised to attract dog hair, so I have bought 3 BBQ mats from Bunnings. Held in place with duct tape I will use these to line the cargo area, covering the seat back, floor and side walls.
      cheers,

      Max

It appears that this is the case...Even after a couple of runs over with the vaccuum cleaner, the fur remains.
I have a woollen blanket that currently gets thrown over my drawers and over the back seat when the dog is with us

We took our kelpie with us on a couple of family camping trips, and we got him a cage from a rural supplies store. The cage was the biggest I could get, that I could get in and out of the car with ease. It was about $100 or so, and collapsed flat when not in use. It basically took up one half of the cargo area, above the drawers. I fixed it in place to the cargo barrier and drawers so it didn't move.

This cage was big enough so he could stand and stretch, but it also kept our luggage and food safe from him...

It also doubled as a kennel when we were in locations that the dog needed to be locked up over night. Was definetley worth the expense.

That is prety much my plan - cage for travel and to use as a kennel when we are camping. I just need to find a cage that fits our dog, but fits around the fridge and 2nd battery in the rear.
Can I ask the size of the cage? Our dog's a Kelpie x ACD, so she'd be about the same size.

Aldi had a fold away canvas type dog kennel for $60 a few weeks ago, fits perfectly in the back to keep Fido in check. Has a little mattress in it and plenty of zip open panels and doors.

Can't remember the size, and I don't have the cage anymore to check. Think the name of the shop we brought it from was tuckers pet and produce.

Had a look at 3 different places, 2 pet stores and a rural supplies store, and no-one had a cage that fits my specific size requirements...
With the fridge and 2nd battery, there are only a handful of sizes that will fit...and it also has to accommodate our dog.

I might have to do some custom fabrication and build a dog box.

After some modifications to the rear - The fridge is now on the drivers side - I have managed to get a crate that fits b-e-a-utifully!
I picked up this from eBay:
                    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/232071548334

It has slanted ends meaning it sits nicely between the 2nd row seats and the rear door. I might have to make a few modifications to let our dog put her head out of the crate...she looked a little cramped when standing up. Sitting/laying she seems to have plenty of room!
I might also need a ramp as its a little awkward to get in and out of.
                    I'll get a photo when I have a chance.

Now to work out how to hold the crate in place...
I want to be able to quickly remove it - any suggestions?????

Probably not useful for your sized dog, but we have a cavalier king charles spaniel & I am going to make up a divider for my rear compartment that runs from the back to the cargo barrier so she can sit above the fridge box.
Plenty of room for a smaller dog!
