  • GPS/Phone Holder and wiring

I managed to score a TomTom iPhone holder for my birthday thanks to the wonderful wife & kids and I wanted to hide the wires as much as possible without causing any permanent holes or excessive hacking to the dash. Thanks to other threads on here taking the dash apart is quite simple, most pieces just pull out, I mainly followed the thread on the reversing camera mod.

After I pulled everything apart I wanted to make sure that whatever I did was fully reversible, I routed the charger lead from the 12v outlet in the middle of the front seats through a spare accessory switch outlet and up behind the dash. Then popped out the drivers side so as to keep the wire tucked away and hidden as much as I could.

I also hand crafted a blank switch cover for the time being from some spare plastic I had lying around until I can source a blanking panel. I didn't want to drill into the factory one at this point. If anyone knows of where to obtain a blank cover could you let me know, I have tried the usual, Supercheap/Autobarn etc but not been able to locate one.

Ideally I would pick up an ignition switched power feed and install an additional 12v outlet, probably behind the console somewhere near the steering wheel. Given my limited electrical experience this will have to wait a while until I can find someone to help out or get the confidence up to start tapping into factory wires  or even better at some point I hope to fit a second battery and then I can run off a fuse block out to a new point.

The pictures should be self explanatory, hope this helps for anyone else considering doing something similar.

Dave what we do is wire in a 12v cigarette socket in behind the dash and then you could have just run the wiring out from under the instrument cluster. This would free up your socket behind the gear knob, make it a discreet install and if needed put two in behind and use one for a GPS unit later

      Hi Paul,

That would be perfect, just what I want to do. Do you have a buildup or anything on how you did this, in particular what components you used and where to pick up the ignition fed 12v? Any advice would be great.

      Thanks
      Dave

        Dave,

I do have a build thread but I have replaced my reverse screen with an 8 " GPS/DVD Multimedia unit. I am still deciding on a holder for my iPhone. My work vehicle has two sockets in behind dash for GPS and feed for a phone.

Jaycar is one of the best places for the purpose of sourcing some good electronics. All you need is a 12v socket, enough twin cable, solder soldering iron, multimeter.

We can do that and even run the power for the phone off whichever battery you want.
