  • Coil spacers on stock suspension

    Hi guys,
Please forgive me if this subject has been cover to death ( can't find anything using the search function about spacers on stock setup ) but I was wondering if anyone has used spacers to lift the car approx. 40-50mm front and rear.
I just got rid my my other car (Nissan ) which had HD suspension and do not want that again for the prado.
Enjoy the plush setup but want to lift it, not really stiffen it.
Do mostly sand beach driving like Stockton, fraser etc...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

For the front, to achieve 50mm lift, you'll need 25mm strut spacers. You will also need to space down the bumpstops.

For the rear you will need 50mm spacers and possibly longer shocks.

Perhaps settle with a 35 to 40mm lift as a compromise.

Just price up the spacers vs new springs and weigh it up. Dobinsons make a spring that is close to the factory's spring rate so there is slightly firmer suspension all round but not harsh.

What accessories have you got installed?

      Thanks for the reply,

Did you install these on stock suspension in your car...?

Does anyone know how high you can lift the front end before either wheel alignment or cv issues arise...?
Would 50mm be ok without any issues?..?

        Cheers

50mm will be ok in front end, but do not use coil spacers at all. It will top the struts out and smash them to bits.
If you are going to do it this way, use strut top spacers instead.
          Something like these below.

For the rear, the shocks will be too short to have any effective downward travel if you put a coil spacer in.
I would recommend longer rear shocks & proper raised coils. It doesn't have to be HD to raise it.

          Regards, Jason.

Strut top spacers must be matched with the correct spacing down of the bumpstops or you will destroy your struts. To achieve a 50mm lift, you will need half that in the spacer. A pair of coils is around the $150 - $180 mark. You are better off with new coils than strut spacers.

You can add raised coils to the factory struts. You just have to make sure that you can still maintain 60mm of droop.

Just picked up my Toughdog suspension kit after deciding that coil spacers are just not worth it.
Went with the pre-assembled front struts, with medium springs and foam cells all round for a 45mm lift.
Any hints/suggestions for the installation process...?

                  Cheers.

                    Hi amts,
                    Thanks for the links.
I assume that it's ok to put downward pressure on the diff to remove the old coils and install the new longer ones...?
Also, is it necessary to remove front sway bar etc as I have the complete strut assembly already.
Shouldn't it just be a remove / replace of the old strut for the new...?

                    Cheers again.

You may need to remove the rear swaybar links to get the coils out and in. Just watch the brake lines when lowering the rear diff.

The front swaybar gets in the way of removing / replacing the strut (assembled or not).

Is that the links to the diff or chassis...?
                        Cheers.
