  • Rear springs won't drop out during install of new kit...

So, I've done my fronts already. I was told the rears were supposed to be easy!

However, I can't get the rear axle to drop enough to get the spring out. Any ideas before I go and buy some spring compressors?? I was able to get the shock out, but am having no luck with the spring.

    Have tried:
    - jacking the other wheel up and down
    - putting some weight on the axle
    - jacking the diff up and down

In the end I gave up and put the it back together, after wasting about 2.5 hours. So what should I try next attempt??

    Cheers,
    Nick

Have you disconnected the sway bar?

    Cheers Andrew

Tried that, but I couldn't get it to swing away much as a result.

Remove brake & abs line brackets & sway bar brackets from diff & it should be a piece of cake.
Remove drivers side spring first & re-install that one last.
If you still have trouble getting them out, your in real trouble installing higher/firmer replacements in.
But getting the old ones out, should be easy.

I should ask, is it stock or raised springs you are removing?

Just did mine. Undo sway bar. To get extra axle extension get hold of your jack and turn it upside down and extend between axle and chassis just enough til you get the spring out. Worked a treat. You may have to un clip a brake line to get necessary extension.

When everyone disconnected the rear sway bar, did they do it through removing the bolts that connected it to the axle or to the chassis? I tried it with the axle connection, but it didn't swing away much (maybe 1/2"), so I'm thinking maybe it got jammed in the bracket and I should try removing it completely, as I did with the fronts.

Just undo the 2 sway bar extensions that go back to the chassis.

Just to be sure, you sre supporting the vehicle under the chassis and allowing the diff to drop fully?

                  Cheers Andrew

Yeah mate, have the chassis on stands.

Will give it a crack this arvo after lunch. Hopefully I can get it to move a bit more this time and get it done, it only needed to move another inch or so. Otherwise, I'll invest in some spring compressors.

This will not defeat me! The impact driver I bought the other day should at least make the job a bit easier this time.

                      Hi all,
With some pointers from amts on this site, I did both front and rear a few days ago.
Rear needs to have the sway bar disconnected from the chassis mount.
I then used a bottle jack placed between the diff housing and the rubber bump stop directly above it.
Jack the diff down making sure you do not over stretch the brake lines in the process.
It was a tight squeeze but worked well.
Longer springs went in no problem when fitted in at the right angle, just a bit of playing around.

I fitted the front without removing the belly pan or the steering rods.
Disconnected the sway bar completely which allows you to move it out of the way.
Used a zip tie to strap it the the upper control arm, which worked well.
I did have the complete strut assembly already so it was just a matter of removing the old one and replace with the new.

                      Good luck.

That is pretty much the process I went through yesterday for the rears. Though, to get the extra movement I needed, I disconnected the cross bar (no idea what it is called) that was connected from one side of the chassis to the other side of the rear axle. Then, for the extra inch I needed, I got that when I removed the brake line brackets. They just popped right out then.

Will post up some photos of the completed lift later on. I need to chop one of my allen keys so I can tighten the front a bit more, but apart from that it is all done.

                        Cheers,
                        Nick
