  • GVM issues

So I've just run the Prado 150 GXL over the weighbridge to see what it weighs with all the major accessories fitted in preparation for a central Australia / Simpson Desert trip later this year. The result 2740kg!! Doesn't leave a lot of carrying capacity if I want to stay under GVM of 2990kg.

Vehicle was weighed with ARB deluxe winch bar with winch, underbody armour, snorkel, towbar, Rhino Rack platform, rear drawers and fridge box (inc 45Lt Engel fridge) and a 150Lt of diesel. The third row seats are still fitted.

I still need to fit in the wife, 3 kids (under 10) and all the recovery gear, camp gear, food and water!!

I had a OME 30mm lift fitted (EK2103A6 - 400kg to GVM) (ended up lifted 45mm after fitting - go figure) plus running BFG A/T's - does anyone know if this will give an improved carrying capacity - unofficially!! ie not complied, certified or most likely legal!

Has anyone experienced this issue? Did you find a solution or just went overloaded?

I don't really have the funds for the GVM upgrade mentioned in the previous post plus not sure if its legal in QLD anyway.

    Cheers Adrian

There is no compliant GVM upgrade package for a Prado. Reality is many vehicles are overweight on the type of trip you are planning and gets down to taking care and looking after your vehicle. consider the load on your tyres also when considering the load spec

Take the 3rd row seats out to regain some payload.

Actually, have you questioned the accuracy of this weighbridge? That weight seems too high.

          60kg steel bullbar
          30kg winch
          30kg underbody armour
          25kg roof platform
          25kg rear drawers
          15kg fridge

I don't see how this adds up to 390kg.

Found this company doing GVM upgrade http://www.statewide4x4.com.au/gvm-products/toyota-prado-150-series.aspx

Was thinking of removing the rear seats for the trip itself for space but now I'll definitely be removing them for weight saving (c45kg??). The weighbridge was the Willawong waste transfer station here in Brisbane - both the entry and exit weighbridges returned the same weight.

Kerb weight (according to Toyota) = 2250kg

            Plus:
            60kg steel bullbar
            30kg winch
            30kg underbody armour
            25kg roof platform
40kg rear drawers + fridge box (home made from ply) - see pic
24kg fridge (according to Engel website)
            25kg towbar
            95kg ME!

            Plus 150 litres of diesel

That adds up to c.440kg plus add another 20-25kg for the bigger tyres, smaller accessories like lights, cargo barrier and UHF etc, and assorted crap that everyone carries in glove boxes and consoles, it all adds up to pretty close to the result I got on the weighbridge.

From what I've read on Pradopoint plus other 4WD forums it isn't valid in QLD. However, looking at what's in the kit (HD springs and shocks) I'm wondering if the suspension and tyre upgrades I've done are an equivalent, and if so, would the Prado be capable of carrying the additional weight safely (ignoring the fact that it isn't compliant and all that goes with it).

I'm guestimating that by the time I add wife and kids (150kg), camp gear (100kg) and food and water (150kg) I'm probably going to be over by about 200kg. And I'll be at my heaviest leaving Mt Dare, but will be getting lighter by the day (less fuel, water, food, beer!).

If needed I can throw a jerry or two of water into the one of the vehicles coming with us - Disco 4 towing a Drifta DOT6 trailer. I'm probably going to be snatching him over dunes, so I may as well get 'paid' for doing so!

The kerb weight of a 150 GXL auto diesel is 2330kg. Kerb weight is supposed to include a full tank of fuel. I still think there is something that isn't adding up.

Sorry, hadn't changed the setting to Diesel / Auto on the Toyota site. There's about 50kg not accounted for somewhere.... as long as kerb weight includes a full tank of fuel. Will give the dealer a call in the morning.

From what little I understand re GVM upgrades they must be done before delivery, that means before registered for the first time.

There are 2 types of GVM upgrades, pre & post rego:

Pre rego is federally certified, is legal to drive in all states, if the vehicle is sold interstate the compliance is transferable.

Post rego is state certified, is legal to drive in all states, however if the vehicle is sold interstate the compliance is not valid and must be recertified.

The Dept against Transport engineers told me that any GVM upgrade wasn't valid and not recognised in Qld. Best check before you commit to anything.

And military, council and services vehicles (Energex, urban utilities, etc.). Plenty of Pootrols and Cruisers owned by various government departments running around with GVM increases in Qld.
