  • Anyone running fox, profender or outback armour on their VX

Looking at changing the suspension on the Prado, it's a VX with kdss but no adjustable ride height. I know that there is a plethora of info on upgrading gxl and gx prados on here bit of info on the Kakadu's as well. I've been trolling through the threads and majority of owners like the bilstein Kings combo. I was looking at maybe going a bit leftfeild got some quotes on fox, profender and outback armour, prices were not much dearer than the fore mentioned setup fox and profender offer an adjustable coil over and seem to be a better quality system could just be marketing although I did read the thread about the bloke who was running the fox and had issues with instillation. I have not heard anything about outback armour but they are designed in Australia and they supply the Australian military. Anyone with info or first hand experience on these or other setups for the kdss feel free to give your pros and cons

      Hey,

Fox is a very different league to Profender or Outback Armour.

While I don't have any experience specific to the KDSS, I can give you a bit of background.

      Fox speaks for itself.

Profenders are a needle valve 10-way (or 12?) adjustable version of the Amadas sold by Superior, made in Thailand. There has been issues in the past for one member with Profender coilovers having way too many coil wraps in the coils, and he ended up with coil bind almost at ride height. You will be able to get around that hassle by now, and you can get nice open lengths on the Profenders. Valving you'll need to chase up with Superior. Amadas have a very leaky seal issue in their history.

Outback Armour are ex-TJM management, who took many of the TJM engineers with them. You won't get decent open lengths from Outback Armour struts or shocks because the engineers follow the standard old TJM recipe, keep the open length very close to OEM length, and all the lift by using spacers and short free height coils. Not a good way to achieve articulation!

Fox shocks are very over engineered inside compared to other manufacturers, similar to King and Icon. As such they tend to have longer closed lengths, which may require bump stop spacing in the rear for their longer shocks.

The Fox problem the other member you referred to was the large diameter of the 2.5" Fox coilovers contacting the swaybar, not many running them on Prados! He fixed it by getting the swaybar reshaped.

If you have the coin, go Fox.

Sorry mate been overseas for a while I decided to go with the tried and tested combination of bilsteins b6 shocks and dobinsons springs only wanted a 2 inch lift but got three I did have trouble trying to get someone to install the kit as here on the sunny coast no one wants to touch anything with kdss. been about three months now height has settled and I am more than happy with the setup
