  • Do I need to lift my Prado

    hi

just a question on why I need to lift my 2015 GXL?

It is not going to give me any more ground clearance, a larger set of tyres will do this.

I paid nearly $70 for my car, so Im not going to tacking it up the Telegraph Line anytime soon, nor rock crawing with it.

Im happy to put air bags in the rear springs to help with the trailer tent.

I can get a decent 2" lift kit for under $1500, so cost is not a factor, the question is do I really need it?

    thanks

    Andy

Based on what you have said you will be using it for i would say NO.
I have had my for close to 3 years now and only put the lift kit in a few months ago.
    Reason is i needed it.
You can take a stock height Prado a lot of places you just need to pick the lines carefully
If you start to add accessories bull bar, second battery then you would need to look at suspension upgrade and the cost to lift it will be about the same as upgraded springs and shocks.

I guess a lot of people (myself included) upgrade the suspension for outback travel. The end result is a 50mm lift in most cases.

If you want to go bush bashing every bit of ground clearance helps but you don't sound like the sort of bloke thats going to drive thru a 2 foot deep puddle of mud, the other day I meet this datsun driver he had a 10 year old black pootrol not 1 scratch on it and was telling me how good a 4wd it was as hes never bogged it my mate asked if he'd ever used 4wd. Do you want to go 4 wheel driving or cruise around a few dirt roads that a commodore would get thru?
I got myself some Big Horn Maxxis and was telling my landrover lover mate he said what size did you get I told him 265/75/16 he said I didn't know they came that small.

          Hi Andy,

Q: "Do you really need to lift my Prado"

A: My opinion Andy..."yes, no doubt about it"...but....

.. let me explain...you sound like you won't need to do the suspension straight away... and I asked myself that same question 6 years ago, and now I've got my second 150 Prado, I am now convinced of the benefits of a 40 mm suspension lift...but likewise, I'm not needing to do a lift straight away...but I will do a suspension lift again by next year.

The stock toyota suspension is reasonably soft, but it will soften up more and then start to sag a bit over time, and you'll have even less clearance...and remember its one thing measuring underbody clearance when a car is stopped in the driveway, but when you are bouncing along a rutted track the car moves up a down, with or without much gear, you will start to bottom out and in effect loose clearance...and much more so with softer stock suspension....depending on what you do, what you tow and where you drive etc....so....you will more than likely need to so something with the suspension at some stage in the future...and in your case it might be best just to wait till the shocks start to wear out a bit ...and that's when you can do a small lift...I recon anyway.

So no, it sounds like you don't need to do the lift right away, and yes the Prado will get you plenty of places with stock suspension, I have done that myself, but after about 40,000-50,000 km, (or less) things start to soften up, and that's when its probably not a bad time to put say a 40 mm lift in, with some better springs and better shocks, that will almost certainly last many many more km's than replacing the suspension with stock Toyota gear

I was amazed at the difference a 40 mm lift made...without it, the under body guards got a pounding, and lots of sand got scooped up into the underbody guards and chassis etc..when I drove on sandy or rutted tracks. With a 40 mm lift, and better quality suspension, the car will bottom out far less, and far less sand is scooped up under the car, far less "diving" under braking or rolling on cornering. The only reason I haven't done a suspension lift yet on the new prado is that I haven't needed to take a car load of gear and people up the beach ..I've been up to Lawn Hill and up the beaches with relatively light loads and just the two of us...and ive only done 25,000km so far ..but I know what suspension lift I will get and who will do it...I'll just do it once I wear some more life out of the original gear first and then I'll make an appointment for a suspension lift (with the good Mr John Zordo.)

          That's my thoughts anyway,

Good luck and enjoy the Prado

I will be looking into a lift sometime in the future but at the moment I'm running just a suspension upgrade and 245/70/17 BFG KO's and I do alittle 4wding,nothing extreme (It doesn't interest me) and I still get a lot of places that a lot of the more tricked out rigs get to.
A little bit of extra clearance isn't a bad thing.
Fitted so far:-Toyota Alloy bar,Redarc BDCD1220 battery managment system and dual power outlet, tracklander full length rack and ladder,Milford cargo barrier,Kaon transmission guard, UVP& Lower Shock mount Guards,Dobinson/Bilstein suspension,Toyota Bonnet and headlight guards,39ltr engel and an opposite lock stubby holder (from the old '80' series),Polyair Airbags,Pradopoint sticker,Gonefishin' custom Sidesteps.

Do you need a lift? Nobody really does unless they're doing the things you mentioned in your post... it's a family car really - but you can do awesome stuff in it (4wding). But... the after market suspension brings other things besides a lift - the kicker being way better handling - add 20km/hr to your sweeping corners

I got my bars installed before I had the suspension upgraded. I did the NSW Toyota Landcruiser club training day on a stock car with recovery points. I'm proud to say the car was damn impressive.

The stock prado stuff was great until I had the extra weight added, it was still very comfy, but it very much toed in on corners and was a little worrisome. As soon as I had the bars, I felt rather edgy on country road corners.

I have dobinsons suspension c/o Zordo - $1400 including install here in canberra, at a stretch, and I'll recommend it any day of the week at any time. It's brilliant. Handling with the barwork and a winch is brilliant. I still wonder why people want to pay more for OME or Bilsteins, but I'm happy to try a bilstein kit with dobinsons for future reference. Either way it kicks the butt off toyota suspension.

My old man has a tricked out prado the same as mine but without the suspension. He does more touring than I do. But we're yet to have a comparo after a year. I have the suspension, he doesn't.

                Thanks guys,
I'll put an upgrade/lift on once I've done everything else.

An old thread, but this was a really interesting read! I'm buying an older 120 and planning to replace the original suspension, so have been debating the merits of getting it lifted at the same time, even though I may not need this straight away.

Now I'm thinking it's worth doing regardless, for the better loaded handling/towing if nothing else.

I've had my 120 since new in 2004. Fitted a ARB 50mm lift with stiffer springs in rear 12 months ago mainly for towing caravan. Wish i'de done it years ago, I don't do anything like serious off road driving but the improvement to its handling on road makes it worthwhile
