  • KDSS - aftermarket suspension lift Ques?

Robbo here, only new to this site and a little confused about the kdss on the new 150. When I added a steel bull bar and winch to the front of my 120 series and loaded up the rear with gear and a camper, I then had to replace all the shockers and springs to regain my clearance. When I go and add all this to a 150 with kdss what will happen??
Any advice would be appreciated, thanks

The same thing, the 200 Landcruiser has been running KDSS on most models since released, it is a system that works with the sway bar faster you go the stiffer it gets, the slower you go the loser it gets to allow for articulation offroad and can you can still change springs and shocks etc all still works together. if your carry that much weight you will still need to upgrade suspension.

        Hi,
Hutch you are quite right about the load, although KDSS works a little different to that, it is a hydraulic system that is not active, it simply has valves that open or close depending upon the movement of the wheels so that in a body roll situation it resists the roll but in an articulation movement it allows the wheels to move more freely. You can see how it works on the Toyota videos, at these links:

When you add a lift with KDSS. You also have to open the valves and install you suspension. After the wheels are back on the ground, close the valves. Just like the Land Cruiser 200 series.

            Hi All,

So you are saying, that a ARB OME Upgrade is possible on a VX with KDSS - Is that correct?

I ask this as I am looking at upgrading my 08 GXL to a VX next year if possible, otherwise I may settle for a GXL.

              Stuart,

as you are based in Lara/Geelong you should go and talk to Darren at Autocraft in Geelong about your suspension requirements. I have spoken to him a few times as have other people on pradopoint. The only thing stopping me from having his kit installed is I live 2500km away and have not found a shop in my area yet willing to install someone elses kit. But if I could plan a trip via Geelong I'd be straight in there!

Re: KDSS - aftermarket suspension lift Ques?

I have Darren's autocraft setup with medium rear springs and polyairs installed on my 150 VX D4D. Rides and handles very well, however it does have a 10mm front and 20mm rear lean to the driver side from the KDSS system. I have heard that this is a common issue even with standard height kdss 150s.

I have tried undoing the valves and rocking the vehicle, and also jacking the vehicle up on one side. I will probably get my dealer to bleed the system and reset it at the next service.

Lean issue aside, I can highly recommend the setup so far. The truck feels well sorted now, I would not describe it as firmer, but more disciplined. I thought that the ride would be harsh given I am going to put a winch and bar on the front and had the spring installed to suit - WRONG. It rides just as nicely as stock. I have not had an oppotunity to go offroad yet.

How does lifting newer cars (150's) etc go with stability control ,handleing, warrenty, insurence etc ? is it worth it for an inch or so ? just curious.

You would noticy them of the change, and if they didnt like it, you would find an insurance company who did.

Dont forget to spell out for them that the raise is to prevent damage to the vehicle for use as its intended purpose, and to prevent damage from carrying close to GVM on rougher secondary roads

In regard top the leaning 150, I know there are some 150's being fixed at standard height with this issue, and I recommended Schniff's vehicle go back to deale rof purchase, as Toyota are the only ones with a computer to set the KDSS, which has seen similar problems with aprox 1 in 20 or so 200's, as well.

I expecting he will come back to me after the Toyota shop visit, to let us know what they did, etc, though if the vehicle was fitted by us here, we would gladly organise it with Toyota localy to check the KDSS set up.

Re: KDSS - aftermarket suspension lift Ques?

Well I finally got around to getting the KDSS system bled by Toyota and there was no change to the ride height. What to do now? Having a look at the system it looks like the driver side sway bar linkages are fixed, whereas the passenger side linkages are variable and connected to the kdss system. Perhaps replacement adjustable passenger side sway bar linkages would fix the issue??

Re: KDSS - aftermarket suspension lift Ques?

Look, I don't have a modern Prado or KDSS, but I have followed the Kinetic suspension project of Chris Hayring's since the late ninties. In its simplest form KDSS is two double acting hydrolic cylinders, with one replacing the swaybar mount on one side at the front and one replacing the sway bar mount on the same side at the back. The two compessive hoses are contected together, and the two extending hoses are connected. Result is if the vehicle tries to lean, both cylinders are being compressed or both under tension and both are are stabilizing each other... no oil flows. However if you cross load your axles, the one unit is under compression, and one in under tension, the oil flows and one extends and the other contracts. Free movement, if a little restricted in speed. In the system there are two acumilators to equalize the pressures and take shock loading. You guys speak of a valve that is used to correct the lean? Ok this must allow the oil to flow between the epansive and compressive sides. The system is so simple that it must be pretty easy to work for the above info and work out how to park on a wee side angle, to correct the lean and open said valve to redistribute the oil.
                        Hope that helps.

I am having OME upgrade done by Giles (ARB) in Sydney next month. Will let you know how it goes.
Big reason for going with ARB is that ARB in Perth have indicated that they will honour any warranty issues.
