  • Front end clunk when coming to a slow stop

    Hi All,
For the last few months I've had a clunk in the RHS front end of my 60K old 2019 GXL when coming to a slow stop. I looked on numerous occasions for anything loose and found nothing until my son noticed that the LCA's appeared to be sliding backwards and forwards on the pivot bolts used for wheel alignment adjustments. We suspected that the LCA bushes were the cause. Took the vehicle to the dealer who said that they'd only seen flogged out LCA bushes on high km vehicles that had done 200K km+. The Service Manager showed me some pics they'd taken with the car on a hoist that showed that the wings that the cam adjuster plates on the pivot bolts were bent, one of them almost flattened. The camber on the RHS you can visibly see is out as the bottom of the right wheel wheel is tilted out slightly when compared to the LHS.

The dealer asked me if I'd had a wheel alignment recently, which I had back in June 2022 prior to a Simpson crossing in July. The Service Manager told me the LCA bushes were OK and to go back to the wheel alignment place and get a wheel alignment as I needed one anyway. And while there bring the damaged cam plate wings to their attention as that damage was most like caused by not tightening the LCA bolts to spec allowing movement. While looking for the clunk myself, the LCA bolts were checked for any looseness and they seemed tight.

Has anyone else had similar issues with their LCA's moving horizontally on the pivot bolts causing a front end clunk when stopping ?

I think your service manager was on the money. Wheel alignment shop didn’t tighten the adjusters properly.
But running the car with loose adjusters usually means the cheek plates will be worn.
I’m disappointed the service manager didn’t go the extra step of pulling the adjusters to inspect for cheek plate wear.
Now you’ll have to rely on the honesty of the wheel alignment shop who may counter that the damage was caused from a Simpson crossing.

Might need to have a closer look to see if the alignment plate was tightened over the wing, thus flattening it or the bolt/nut wasn't tight enough and caused the alignment plate to move and pushing the wing over. Should be an easy fix for the wheel aligner.
