  • 2011 GX - Changing rims and tyres

Hi All, New to this forum, picking up Prado GX auto next Monday. I'd appreciate members comments on changing rims, tyres as the tyres that come with the vehicle are pretty useless as 4WD tyres. I would like to change to the same tyre size as the GXL and fit BFGoodrich 265/65R17 LT tyres, which will involve buying new, wider rims to suit the wider tyres.

Can members advise me what might be the downside of doing this? The rims would have to be aftermarket alloys or steels (the latter being cheaper & more suited to bashing around off road) and I assume that they would need to have the same offset.

The little voice in the back of my head asks would these changes do anything to the effectiveness of Vehicle stability control, active traction control, downhill assist control, and hill-start assist control.

    Regards, John Sneddon

search a build up thread from Dobbo, he has done this, no issues.

Re: 2011 GX - Changing rims and tyres

I have put Speedy Avalanche rims on my GX 17 x 7.5" which are the same size and offset as the GXL wheels. I then put BFG 265 70 R17 tyres on. No problenms at all. I actually got these fitted from new by the dealer.

Re: 2011 GX - Changing rims and tyres

I enquired about doing this too. Cost for 5 x Speedy Avalanche rims and 5 x BFG 265/65R17 was about $2900 WITHOUT swap over/trade-in. That was ringing the first place i thought of. I reckon if you went to a larger dealer you would get a better price. I allowed ~$200 to $225 for the rims and ~$350 for the tyres.

I also checked a few tyre places for the varieties of tyres for the GX vs GXL. Slowly but surely the GX is increasing but in all reality you will have a much better chance of getting a GXL tyre in remote locations.

My 2c worth (which means with rounding it is free )
