Who has upgraded their Tyres on a VX or Kakadu?

Hey guys,

After putting 75,000kms on the factory Grandcraps, it's time for some new tread on my Kakadu. At this point I'm looking at Hankook Dynamo ATMs. My question is what size. They come in factory standard 265/60R18 but I'm considering the 275/65R18. I am however really nervous about clearance particularly to the upper control arm at the front. There are reports of caster adjustments on this forum etc. Suspension is stock so no lift etc. What has anyone had issues with clearance on an un-lifted rig.

Also what are people's experiences with Hankook dynapro ATMs? They come highly re comments by my brother who runs 3 4x4s spraying weeds in the high country so he's putting 60,000 kms on 3 cars in some pretty rough country with a heap of weight and he swears by them.....but he seems to be the only one?

Hi Troy,
I am running the Dynapro's 265/70/17 on my Prado, and I think they are great so far.
Not a mud tyre for sure, but as a general all terrain tyre they are hard to beat, especially for the price compared to BFG's which I had on my old pathfinder, and the sidewall construction is better (so I'm told).
I do more sand driving than slippery stuff so that's why I chose these instead of a more aggressive tyre, as my experience with tyres like maxxis bighorns on the sand are not great.
The Dynapro's are almost as quite on the highway as the standard ones which is nice when on long trips.

looks like my next upgrade will be COOPER 275/70R17 121R AT3 wrapped around 17X8.5 Dick Cepek TORQUE Gun metal grey. just need to sell my 5x18 Kaka wheels. Pretty sure this wont fit in the rear wheel cover, although don't mind the naked look...

Ensure careful selection of the width and offset of the rims to avoid fouling with the KDSS components.

Thanks amts, will have to check with that, they said that they have fitted them to a couple of 150's although now had better check to see if they were Kaka's or VX's.

Ok, so I have just bought a set of 2014 FJ rims, apparently they have only done 800km before being replaced with aftermarket ones. Now all I need to do is off load my 18inch Kaka ones. Amts, you are right, the ones i was looking at would not fit, thanks for the heads up...

Sorry Mate, they have already been sold. All five of them, they had the original AT22 on them.

Do the 2014 FJ rims fit ok without rubbing? Did you put the Coopers on them?

They fit really well, no coopers yet. I don't think the 275/70/17's will for without lift tho. The 265/75/17's just fit in the spare wheel cover, so I think that's as big as I will go. I'm hearing it's pretty hard to lift with KDSS??

My VX is 5 weeks old and I'm on my way to Caloundra at the end of November to pick up an AOR Quantum camper, so want to get wheels/tyres interchangeable all round. The camper comes with 17"rims, but for GXL (no KDSS and different brake callipers)

I've been looking for 17" but it's a bit hard to find anyone that's finished their projects to proven options. Are your FJ rims genuine or after market?

I was asking about the 18" as a back-up plan.

According to http://www.wheel-size.com/tire_calcu...5-75-17X7.5ET0

VX std = 265 x 65 x 18 = 775 diameter
275 x 70 x 17 = 817 diameter (Coopers)
265 x 75 x 17 = 829 diameter (non Coopers - can't find this size in the Cooper catalogue)
If your 265/75/17 fit in the spare wheel cover, so should the Cooper 275/70/17

Just had to check and mine are 265/70/17 that gives a rolling diametre of 802.8mm
the Wheels are Genuine Toyota FJ ones.

I have 285/70/17 BFG muddies fitted to my VX with DC torque rims +6 offset. Fit perfect no rubbing !!! Look sick
