I have read this forum and I can't read where someone who actually has a 150 series VX or Kakadu with 18"wheels and who has successfully installed a 17" wheel with same +25 mm offset without binding the front brake caliper. ARB, Toyota, Mullin Wheels (CSA dealer) all say it can't be done. The GXL brake caliper assembly has a different part number to the Kakadu suggesting that in fact there is a difference in front brakes between GXL and Kakadu. SpeedyWheels with their Avalanche say it should fit but they can't tell me they have actually installed this 17" wheel on a VX or Kakadu successfully at the front. There is only 1 cm or so clearance as it is on the 18"wheel. Rosco

Re: 18 to 17 inch wheel change on a VX / Kakadu
Thks amts - I had not seen babs latest reply from yesterday - in the string of enteries that I too have also contributed to.
Schiff runs 17"CSA Explorers - I call Mullens Tyres - dealer for CSA - today . They said the Explorers have not been around for some time. They also told me that one of their rep's from SA had an 18" Prado (? model) and he said apparently only last week that he could not get a 17"wheel onto his Prado - and he's a rep for a tyre /wheel company!!
Ages has 17"on his ZR but has only a 6 mm offset in his entry, not a normal +25mm
babs - mentioned that his brother had a Dealer do a swap for his VX , putting on GLX 17" - that's the first time I have read "˙es I have 18"wheel Prado 150 series and yes I have put on a 17"wheel without binding the front brake caliper." .. Tomorrow I am now going to try a fitment test myself with a 17"SpeedyWheel Avalanche on my Kakadu, and will let this forum know whether it works or not.
Every one else has told me that it can't be done - Kakadu running on 17"wheels - Melbourne Toyota dealers (despite what babs said and that was a VX model - it also has 18"OE ) , ARB Kilysth, Mullens, ROH wheels. I wonder whether or not the VX has a different (smaller) brake caliper to the Kakadu, as the part number is different for a GXL suggesting they are different. Thks

Re: 18 to 17 inch wheel change on a VX / Kakadu
I think there is a lot more to a wheel than just the rim diameter, width and offset measurements. The Kakadu may well have a different brake configuration to the rest of the range. Or the geometry of a genuine Toyota 17" for the 150 is slightly different to everything else on the market.
Maybe have a rethink of going down a size and stick with 18" and upgrade the tyres. Might not be much choice at the moment but there are a couple of good ones such as:
18 inch tyre options
18" A/T tyre choices (my findings)
