  • Feedback on 18 to 17 " wheel swap

SpeedyWheels Avalanche 17"wheels I am sure were designed for a Prado 18" vehicles. Cost $165 per wheel from TyrePower. On Special this month from SpeedyWheels.

The fit was perfect. There is NO compromise with this wheel swap.
The inside rim is stepped allowing heaps of room inside for the front brake caliper - as if it was an 18". The alloy wheel is even slightly heavier than the average alloy to meet the wheel weight advised for the 150 series. They look great - they even come with a fully machined aluminium (not plastic) anti vibration plate that goes over the hub if you want to use it. Nice valve stem with an alloy valve cap.
Wheel nuts are 19mm instead of 21mm and needs a thin wall socket - a standard wheel brace will NOT fit. 5th wheel with a 265/65 R17 tyre fits perfectly in the rear door carrier.

    I love 'em

Is this a different diameter tyre to the standard 18 that comes on the car?

    Is speedo correct?

Is it legal to back swap? I know I had to have engineers certificate done for simply going larger in tyre, backwards I would imagine is the same?

The 265/65R17 and 265/60R18 are very close in outer diameter.

      Is speedo correct?
Due to the above, the speedo is still reading the same.

This is an interesting one. Normally, people go for larger wheels over the OEM (and by up to +2"). IIRC, the rulings also state that you can go up to 2" larger than the wheel sizes specified by the OEM for that particular range of cars. eg if a Commodore can have 17" (Omega) to 19" (SS) wheels, then an Omega owner can legally go up to 21". So interpretating this, my deduction is that you can go down in size as long as it is listed in the OEM size for that model.

Further to this, in SA, I found this www.transport.sa.gov.au/pdfs/safety/def ... hicles.pdf
which states that the rim size must be within 50mm diameter of what is stated on the tyre placard.

In qld rim diameter does not matter one bit. It's the overall diameter of the tyre that matters. -26mm to +15mm is legal. Therefore, if tyres fit within in this requirement, wheels can be any size.

reply to Piggy, what I put on was the same that the GXL's run - OD 776mm (when new) compared to the 18inch's 775mm.
Interestingly - with 34000kms the diameter of the OE tyre (with the thread depth wearing down to 5 mm remaining) the OD had come back to 760mm!! This was making the speedo over reading about 2 kph (compared to GPS) in comparasion to when the tyres were new. Now the speedo is so close to GPS speed it doesn't matter. Rosco.
