  • 18' Tyres - What to get

    Hi Guys,
I have been reading and signed up for a few months now, waiting for my VX TD to arrive mid Dec.

Been reading alot about tyres, I am thinking of doing the straight swap when it arrives for some Cooper LTZ 285 60 18's.

Have any of you got these fitted for a stock standard Prado?

I will be putting a 2' lift on it in the new year, ARB Bar, dual batteries etc etc

    Any help appreciated.

KAKADAZ has done something similar. Do a search for his rig build up and his thread in the 150 thread section.

AT3 is now available as a direct replacement! Just had a look on their website! I had the ATR's on my Grande and got 130,000 KM's out of them and probably still had 30,000 still to go?

          Hi Greg,
I'm new on here, have a SWB 150 ZR Prado and have been on the hunt for replacement 18" tyres as well. Found out at this weekend's 4WD and Adventure show in Perth that Mickey Thompson tires now have a 265/60/18 Baja STZ. I actually saw one on display so they are definitely in the country. Might be worth checking it out. They are the passenger rated tyre OD mm 775 and 110T rated. I liked the look of them, a bit more aggressive than the Yokohama Geolanders. Rep said they retail in Perth for $410 a tyre.

Depends if you want a bit more Diameter or not? I wanted larger than standard its a good way to get a bit more lift.

              Hi,

I'm a complete amateur at both forum use and four wheel driving but I did recently fit the Mickey Thompson Baja STZ 265/60/18 to my Kakadu.
I've done around 1000k's on them now and have been pretty impressed. I took them on some slippery tracks around Rubicon where I'd scared myself previously with the GrandTrek AT22's and they gave me so much more bite and plenty of confidence. They do tend to pick up stones though and seem to hold them for a while too (i.e. still picking them out a week later).
I can't tell if they are noisier on the blacktop and if they are the difference is too small to be worth worrying about. I did get a fright with the reduction in wet bitumen traction when travelling up the twisty bit of the Maroondah Hwy...nasty understeer and traction control having conniptions more than once, but this is to be expected when shifting away from a road focussed tyre. Solution: slow down.

In summary, I reckon these tyres look the business and will suit my occasional weekend exploring perfectly. Very happy customer.

P.s. Paid $390 x 5 minus the trade in for the AT22. Fits under the rear wheelcover no dramas.

                Hi Guys,
Thanks for your info, I have the following quotes with the trade in of new tyres from the local toyota dealership:
                285/60x18 Cooper LTZ $1375.00

The 275/70x18 will be too tall for the vehicle but they make a 275/65x18 in the new AT3 pattern and the cost of those will be $1760.00.
These prices are for (5) tyres fitted and balanced and include the trade in and GST

I reckon I could sell the new dunlop tyres better on ebay or something right?

I think I am sold on the LTZ's
                Cheers,
                G

The LTZ's are super grippy in the wet I'm surprised you say the STZ's aren't. You will find though any reasonably aggressive tread will pick up gravel in the treads that's standard. I got $150 per tyre for my Grandcraps with about 10,000 ks on them from the tyre shop.

Gents. Excuse the dumb questions (first post here)... Looking at junking the Grandtreks on my 150 series VX. As an Alternative to the Coopers/Mickey Thompson and Yokohamas, BFG do the A/T in 265/65r18. Will the extra few mm of height cause any problems with an otherwise stock set up?

(Also thinking of dropping the rim size to 17" but can't find the thread. Any pointers?)

                    Cheers

                      Hey Lads,

I've got a Kakadu and after reading the forums and driving to several tyre places in Perth i decided to fit the Coopers
AT3 as a direct replacement for my 265/60R/80. I looked into MT STZ's (didn't like the look of them), BF Goodrich (couldn't find one as a direct fit) The Yoko's (also didn't like the look) and decided on the Coopers cos they look better and apparently are a good tyre too. Got a set of 5, traded in me old ones which had done 30K km's and pick them up in 2 hrs...

Will take some photo's and post

                        Orpedo,
I'm keen to purchase some new rubber for the Kaka. Would like to get Bridgestones but want a direct replacement so I can use the Dunlop At22's as spares.
Where your new tyres the passenger construction AT3. If so how are they going. What was the price of the tyres without the trade in?

I am really keen to get some feedback on anyone that has used the Cooper AT3 passenger construction tyre as the 18's only come in this format and not the light Truck. So I am looking at purchasing either the 265/60/18 AT3 or the Geolander AT-s GO12. Any feedback would be welcome. I don't know whether Micky Thonpson does the 265/60/18's. Also if possible where in Perth should one go to get the best deal!!!

                            Hi Ken,

I've got the Geo AT-S G012's on my vehicle and have had them for about 1 year now. They are nice an quiet on road and grippy in the wet, and have been good to me off-road also. They've performed very well in sand (even down to 10 PSI) and work well on rock and gravel. I've been in mud once and got stuck but that may been a clearance issue, not really the tires. They seem to wear at a reasonable rate, I guestimate I'll get at least 60-70,000km's.

I chose these tires as I traded the Grandtreks in when they were brand new and the only place that would trade in was Bob Jane's.
