  • Cooper A/T3 All-Terrain vs BF Goodrich

Guy's i looking at options to change the tyres and not sure which one is better for average 4wding, i am thinking either Cooper A/T3 All-Terrain or BFG Goodridge in 265/65 r17 for the GX Prado.
Now i know some may say go for the Cooper S/T Max but i do not want that aggressive a tyre and it does not come in 65 profile.

There seem to be a lot of hype over the new cooper tyres, and i am not sure if it is just that, but i am after your constructive thoughts of the Cooper A/T3 All-Terrain vs BFG Goodridge T/A all terrain.

The BFG AT is much more like the S/T (aggressive end of the AT spectrum) in construction and capability than the AT/3.

      Ford or Holden
      Maccas or Hungry Jacks
      Dan Murphys or Liquor Land

Really doesn't matter as they are both capable tyres. How much offroading are you really going to do. A lot of the time it will come down to the weather, line selection, tyre pressures and good old fashioned luck when offroad and I don't mean driving down a dirt track.

I got the AT3's as the BF Goodrich were way more expensive and not easily available when I purchased.

Have you (or are you) changed your rims? GX rims are only 6.5 inch and the maximum width boot that will go on that rim is 245.

Yes the existing rims will be going, i have settled on the Speedy Avalanche wheels. Which a few members have also selected.

Crisp, if he has the series two prado (07) change over when the D4D went into the 120's they increased the size of the rim to the same as the alloys which on the 120's is 17x7.5 same off set and everything as the alloys, yes the earlier 120's were 17x6.5, bloody ugly looking wheel
              these are earlier gx rims

              these are later model

Thanks Steve, Being under the 150 thread I assumed that it is a 150GX like mine.

Didnt even realize that. The 150 GX's now come with alloys but are still only 6.5 wide as you have stated. Cheers Steve

Are you meaning the new Cooper St Maxx 3 ? Which looks an awesome 4wd tyre, but the one issue that worries my about them is their poor stopping distance, in the 4wd action comparison it was significantly less traction in dry which worries me about the wet stopping distance, as i also tow a boat which puts allot of extra load onto the car. There for i was leaning towards the BFG A/T or A/T3.

Yeah it is true, it is had to do a subjective test at times and results can always differ from car to car. How do you also find the noise of these compared to other all terrain Tyre's you have had, much noise increase from the standard road tyres .
I also think the guy's are using coopers because they are getting a great deal from them. ie a free sets to use for advertising !!!!

I had the BFG AT put on my 120 feb last year. Fantastic tyre. I have now done 110,000 on them and are fitting a new set on Monday.
Can't complain about that. Have not had a single puncture and have done quite alot of off-road work but mostly highway k's. Was hoping they would hold out another 3 months as that is how long its going to take for the new 150 to get here.
