  • 18's Hankook DynaPro ATM RF10

    Same old subject, which tyres?

Does anyone have experience with "Hankook DynaPro ATM RF10"?

Here's my situation, I'm looking for 265/65-18's, the 65 profile seems to be an issue.

Options as best as I can find are,

Hankook DynaPro ATM RF10 - $300.00 each available locally
BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/AKO - $530.00 each available locally (Light Truck rated)
Cooper AT 3 - $400.00 each if I import them myself

Goodrich pricing is rediculous, but, are they so good they're worth the price?
Despite the price they are in very short supply! So maybe there's something to them?

Cooper AT 3's, the importer Exclusive Tyre Distributors aren't going to import this size any time soon, confirmed directly with them today.
They have tried but apparently can't get supply and they said that is unlikely to change anytime soon, it appears this size is becoming popular as 18's become more common.
If I import them myself and 1 is damaged in transit or I stake one in use, it's a hassle having to import another to match.

That pretty much leaves the locally available and locally supported Hankook DynaPro ATM RF10.

Hopefully someone has some personal experience with these tyres?

Have I missed anything, is there another 265/65-18 that I haven't considered?

I'm aware of the 285/60-18 and 275/65-18 options but not really interested, I don't like the idea of tyres rubbing at all and I'm after in an increase in height not width.

Looking into this it appears that 265/65-18 is becoming a popular size but it may take 12 months for options to become available here, there's plenty of options available in the US but not much stock.

Any comments, particularly from people with personal experience with these tyres, greatly appreciated.

The AT3's are a great looking tyre but I've heard good things about the hankooks as well. I didn't think you could get that size in them though.

      Hey Daz,

265 / 65 - 18's are certainly in short supply, the Hankooks and BFG's aren't available until mid January and even then there won't be many. BFG's are almost all sold to existing orders, Hankook will have some extra stock.

Had a look at the Hankook's yesterday, tyre looks ok but a bit thinner in the side wall than I would like.

So I've ordered the Cooper's from the US.

Fingers crossed all works to plan!

Try the Michelin A/T. We have just loaded on our ZR and they are brilliant and very quiet on the road.

Were Bridgestone D694 tyres an option for you at all?
Did you get a price and have any idea of their availability, as they seem to be reasonably popular.

            Wandy,

            What size are the Michelin's?
Did you get them locally or import them?
            How much $?

            brogers,

No I didn't really look at the Bridgestones, in the 265/65 - 18's it seems to be "Dueler A/T Revo 2" not 694, or at least that's what I could find.
I looked up some reviews on the Revo 2's and the thinking was good tyre but people are getting low mileage.

                Hi BNEGXL,
I am a little on the slow side here as still working my way around all the posts, but I have the Hankook's on mine in a 265/70/17 and have had a realy good run with them, so far 40,000K and only one flat from a builders screw in town, but they have been over to the Kimberly and back with the trailer on and had no worries, not sure if the 18's are any differant.

                  Thanks Magiver,

What happened to the Mickey Thompsons as per your profile?
                  How do the Hankooks compare?

I got my AT3's fitted at Ace Tyres in Tingalpa, good people. They sell the Hankooks and are a bit of a 4WD specialty shop, I hadn't been there before.
They are Hankook Dealers, (as well as Goodrich, Mickey Thompson etc.) and he talked the Hankooks up. I came across them on the Pajero forums where they like them and the bloke at Ace reckons the Range/Land Rover people use them a lot too.
                  Apparently all very happy.
If I had spoken with Ace prior to purchasing the Coopers I think I would have gone with the Hankooks.

Still happy with the AT3's though and very happy with the increase in tyre diameter.

I still have the MTZ's I scored a second set of factory alloys at the right price so swap the rims back and forward depending on where I'm going, but the Hankooks have done the most miles so far and are holding up alright, the MTZ's are getting noiser by the mile though....

                        Daz,

                        I went through http://www.myamericanshopper.com/ ,
I found the best deal I could for them here , http://www.treadepot.com/tire/51748.html
I then got My American Shopper to order them on my behalf and forward them to me here in Brisbane.

It didn't end up being cheap, $157 each per tyre, plus local US cartage (Treadepot to My American Shopper), plus International Forwarding.
At the exchange rate at the time just over $1,900 then $25 per tyre to strip, fit and balance.
The Hankooks I was looking at were $300 each fitted.
While not cheap, it was easy, I sent one email, paid and they were delivered.
Freight from the US was expensive, nearly twice what Tirerack charge I think. My American Shopper used DHL airfreight, I recieved the tyres within 3 days of them recieving them from Treadepot. The local US cartage took longer.

No issue with Aus Customs as all 5 tyres were well under the $1,000 limit.

If I were doing it again I would approach DHL or another International Freight Forwarder directly, I'm not sure it would work but I'd give it a go.

Regarding the tyres themselves, I'm very happy, I've done about 1,000 k's since they were fitted, half of those towing our boat which weighs about 1.6 tonnes.
They are quiet, comfortable and the size increase has not affected the cars towing ability.

We are booked in for Fraser for the Australia Day long wekend so I will see how they go in the sand.

I am curious (as an American living in NZ for years now), why are you purchasing through a third party? I've never done it before but can certainly attest to DHL being a nightmare. I prefer UPS or US Postal Service.

I can't speak for anyone else, but for me it's a combination of,

1/ paying for the security of getting it done properly
2/ but mainly a lack of knowledge of how to do it a better way.

                            What would you recommend?

It would certainly reduce the cost by taking out the third party.

I've been looking at sourcing my tyres from the US. While i'd like to support Australian business, i think that paying upwards of 50% extra is a bit of a stretch. This is the group i'm looking at using to bring in my tyres, wheels, suspension etc etc.
