  • What Tyres!

    Hi Guys,
I know most of you do a lot of off roading, but we use ours mainly for caravaning and a little amount of off road. Any advice as to what to choose, or any info good or bad would be appreciated.
    Cheers

I went factory sized Yokohama Geolanders, they are an All Terrain but very sturdy. They come with a puncture guarantee - any repairable punctures in the first 50% tyre wear are repaired FREE. If a tyre is non-repairable in the first 25% they replace for FREE. If in 25-50% wear, they replace pro-rata (40% wear, you pay 40% of new tyre price).
So far so good after 20,000km. Wear is not noticable to me, no doubt have worn to a certain extent. Looking good for quite a few more miles yet.
Only Yokie's and maybe one model of Coopers were available in the 265/65R17 size and I didn't want to change sizes as in QLD you can only go 15mm bigger legally anyways.

I'd look at a Light Truck tyre, stronger in the sidewall and a bit more stable while towing.

Not necessary but I think it helps.

Cooper do an AT3 Light Truck in 265 / 65 - 17 and I guess other manufacturers do to.

      I had the Cooper ATR Light Truck 265 / 70 - 17's on our 120.

      I was very happy.

Was running BFG mud terrains, until I damaged 2 and could not get replacements, so went over to all terrains. First thing I noticed was that the all terrains through more stones than the muds and the noise of stones hitting under the car was a lot worse. We tow a Jayco finch and with the all terrains we collected more stones in the stabilizer legs and more damage to the van than we did with the muds. Looking back, with the old short mud flaps and mud terrains the gravel rash on the rear was not as bad as some I had seen.

Cooper LTZ's. Same as the MT STZ's im running, they looks the same tyre but very slight pattern difference. Both LT tyres, both keeping you legal.

I use Bridgestone D694's in LT construction. I use size 275/65/17, 13mm larger than 265's but still legal in NSW and Qld. (the Bridgestone website gives the specifications of the various tyre sizes) The 275 have a slightly higher load rating than the 265, and the speedo reading is closer to the GPS reading because of the larger diameter, meaning a more accurate speed.

Travel some off road, also tow a full size van.
