  • Tyre Pressures

    Hey All
A relative newbie to PP so I will apologize in advance if there is already a thread discussing this. I picked up my new T/D 150 Prado yesterday and have swapped the tyres out for a set of Pirelli Scorpion ATR's as this is what I had on my 90 series and was really happy with them. As usual the tyre place pumped them up to 45psi and I have checked the owners manual which says 29psi. I have them currently at 35psi. Has anyone got these tyres and what pressures do you run for even wear?
    Thanks in advance

I don't have those tyres (couldn't find them here in LT construction) but I do have a T/D 150 and run 30 psi on highway, 24 psi off road, and 14 psi starting pressure on sand / dunes. This is what I have found to work best for me but opinions vary.

On the road, a good rule of thumb is to check the pressure of the tyres when they are cold then drive around for a while. If the tyre pressures go up by more than 4 psi this indicates too much friction so put more air in the tyre until the change in pressure doesn't go up by more than 4 psi from cold to warm. This will change as a function of load on the tyre so you may need to add more air when the vehicle is heavily loaded compared to when not. One way to control for this is to measure the length of the tyre actually in contact with the ground when it is at the ideal pressure and to maintain this length (and for the length to be the same front and rear) regardless of load [i.e. the heavier the load, the more tyre pressure to shorten the foot print].
2009 Prado 150 D4D GXL with 265/70R17 Cooper AT/3 tyres, Max Trax, HR tow bar, Airtec snorkel, UHF and the usual recovery gear. On the list: cargo barrier, Bilstein shocks and King springs, deluxe winch bar, 10000lb winch, Lightforce 240 XGT spotlights, dual spare wheel carrier

Yep, quite a few threads on this topic already.

Google for "4 psi rule". Here are a few I prepared for you earlier

FWIW, 35 psi sounds about right. All you need to do is verify that with the 4psi rule.
