Actually Option 2 talks about suspension lift too so now I'm really confused.

I agree with you about the Grandtreks - not really a fair trade for the BFG ATs

Might be worth a word to the dealer and seeing if they will pay for the VASS Certificate. It would seem the optimal solution - unless of course you could convince them throw in a suspension lift

Pardon my ignorance but what is a VASS Certificate?

There are some details on VASS in Section 3 of the Vic Roads Modifications Guide. I'm going out on a limb here but as the tyres don't qualify as an approved modification without the suspension lift, the VASS inspection and certificate should allow for the "modified" vehicle to be registered. Just a thought....

Have a read of section 4.2.4 of this and tell me how you interpret it :- http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roa..._2011%20v3.pdf

            It's a document listed as part of VSB 14 :- http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roa.../vsb_ncop.aspx

The VicRoads lady I spoke to this afternoon was referring to VSB 14 so I'm assuming VicRoads use those standards. My Prado is listed as category MC on the compliance plate so not classified as a passenger car. If I read this right than a suspension lift is not required for a 4WD to comply.

I looked through the section and it reads to me that you are allowed to go 50mm larger or 26mm shorter as long as the speedo accuracy is within the applicable range.

I didn't check my speedo for accuracy after fitting the tyres. I ran a recalibrate via the builtin GPS without thinking about it, when I cross checked it afterwards with another GPS it was pretty accurate.

A tyre dealer I spoke to today quoted the new regs but only the bit about going up to 50mm larger in the OD. There's a post on the Mickey Thompson site about the new regs which he referred to. If you read the documents closely though there's all sorts of other provisos that I as a lay person can't possibly hope to understand.

Here's the link to the MT article :- http://www.mickeythompsontires.com.a...n=Read&Arg1=49

According to VicRoads it's not just the Overall Diameter to consider though, there's ESC compliance, etc, etc. I'm trying to get the dealer to sort this one out since they sold me a car with RWC that included the larger tyres.

I have just returned from Cape York and had Yoko Geolanders on the truck (265/60R18). I didn't want to get into the other issues related to changing the size and therefore had the choice of these or Cooper AT3. I chosse the Yokos because of the warranty they provided. On the trip One tyre was punctured by a rock and ran flat for a small while. Yoko's replacement warranty came into effect. They replaced the tyre when I returned to Perth. However I now notice that Bridgestone Dueller LT265/60R18 are now available and am told there are plenty in stock. These would have been a real alternative for me althopugh I hae had no issues with the Geolanders. Soft ride and not much noise on the black top.

Have finally heard back from the dealer and after speaking with VicRoads themselves they are going to replace my tyres with an equivalent AT spec tyre in the 265/60/R18 size. VicRoads are still insisting that only 15mm is allowed under the current regs and I don't want any issues with insurance since the Kkakadu is my daily drive.

I have advised them about the D697 so hopefully I will get a set of those to replace the BFGs, sadly the BFGs don't come in the standard Kakadu size. If anyone has had the D697s fitted I'd appreciate some feedback on how they perform. Also hubby wants the white letters on the outside but after having them that way on the old Prado with D694s I'm not so sure, they got grubby pretty quick and I think they will be a pain to keep clean. I'll try and find some photos so I can get an idea of how they'll look, might be hard to find any pics with them on black wheels though.
