Is it unusual to have a large number of balance weights on an 18" rim? I was just having a gander under the arches and noticed just how many weights a few of my wheels have, 15-20 and one of them has 2 rows (one on the edge just behind the spokes and another closer to the inside edge but further along. One of the wheels appears to have none but I couldn't get a real good look at it. The Bridgestone D697 LTs (265/60/R18) were fitted by my dealer but they claim they sent it to a "proper tyre joint" to do the actual work.

Look for the yellow and red dots on the tyre. The yellow dot should be closest to the valve in order to give the minimum amount of balance weight when using the "weight method".

If the yellow dot is opposite the valve, then expect to have a lot of balance weights near the yellow dot.

Actually the OE rim should have a drilling or a painted dot on the rim ,you line up the red dot on the tyre with that dot , lining up the yellow dot with the valve is the second option ,also the dot is only on one side of the tyre , so if somebody wants the white writing on the inside , well all that is out the window,, this only works in theory most of the time

The weights have their weight stamped into them and you can see that , with the type of balance you have done anywhere from 0 grams to 150 grams is normal for that particular tyre with that type of balance

You can some times get a better balance if you rebreak the bead after and spin the tyre 1/4 turn ,re-inflate it and try again, this may have to be done 3 or 4 times with each tyre, but this depends on the shop , if they give a stuff

Sounds horribly like an "out of round" tyre to me, I be asking for a new one. I have had this problem before and you will never fix it and it will get worse when the servicing dealer does a tyre rotation as they dont woryy about balances.

Hi there down under. I got a question for you and the forum. Is the tyre size you have, 275x65x18, the biggest you can put on an original 18 inch rim without any modifications? I'm considering to try 275x70x18 but not sure if it will touch into the inside of the fender some where. Perhaps 265x70x18 may fit?

              Thanks for your answer,
              Regards Truls

When I picked up my Kakadu in October last year it had BFG 265/65/R18 ATs on it and they had been on it about 18 months. Checking with VicRoads I was told they were illegal as they were > 15mm over the OD of the placarded tyre. I had them changed by the dealer (no cost to me) for the Bridgestone D697 LTs in the 265/65/R18 standard Kakadu size. Now the rules have changed and I'm told the bigger tyres are now legal but try convincing VicRoads.

I'm happy with the Bridgestones in the LT spec, I wouldn't go passenger if you're planning to go off-road. I haven't used Coopers so can't comment but if you search on here a few guys have had dramas with them.

Sorry, haven't tried them in mud yet. Have been on dirt and gravel with them but nothing too aggressive. I had D694s on the 95 series and was happy with them too, the D697s are the replacement model.

I'm not sure if you can still get them, they're the old model.

I have taken some shots this arvo. had them fitted up this morning. All went well and no srubbing & clearence issues. measure wheel track from center of tyre to tyre and track is shorter by 3-5mm with the new rims & tyres. and very happy with the look and they seem to handle very well on tar. Have to find some mud now & try em out

I think they look the goods with the new rims & looks very much like the standard Kakadu but I must say that my personal taste are that these rims suit the prado better than the hilux

I Think it looks as if I may have started something!!!

Ebay is going to be flat out soon. LOL.
I like the fact that there is so many more tyre choices out there now with the 17".
I agree with you on your comment though jasen.

Why? There's enough tyre choices out there now in the 18", the dealer gave me a few to choose from. I chose the Bridgestones because they suit my needs driving mainly on tar but have some grip for a bit of off-road action. I've also had them on the previous Prado. Unless you're spending all your time on dirt I personally don't see any need to throw mud tyres on; they will be noisy on road and wear out too fast.

I want A/T3 275/65R18LT does anyone know if they are legal as I have been told by a dealer that they are not?
You need to read the tyre and wheel modification regs for your state thoroughly, it seems to vary. There have been a few threads on the subject already, perhaps have a read through those as well.

In my case I was told the 265/65/R18 BFGs that came on my Kaka were over-sized and despite both me and the dealer ringing Vic Roads to argue the regs they wouldn't budge. In the end I chose not to risk it from an insurance point of view and I got a new set of tyres out of it.
