  • 2nd Spare options (GXL 150)

    Hi All,

Has anyone come across a good option for a second spare other than finding secondhand GXL rims?

I am trying to sort out my 2nd spare however haven't been able to find any steel options, I am considering buying a cheap alloy wheel and using that.

    Cheers

I bought a Sunraysia rim for about $100, then you need a tyre of course - could get a second hand, but matching tyre a bit cheaper. did the same for my caravan.
Prado 150 GXL Auto Diesel, Toyota tow bar, rubber mats. RedArc remote head brake controller behind screen. Rhino Rack with Rhino bag, TJM colour coded steel Bull Bar, TJM Sump and transmission bash plates, Airtech snorkel, IPF 2xHID Spot and 2xHID Fog. Home built aluminium framed drawer system, 12 pin plug to van, High current wiring to cargo area, 7.5inch screen for 5 rear vision cameras (4 in van).

Thanks for the info, you get these in the same offset etc as the Prado wheels?

Luckily a mate has just put 4 new tyres on his rig ready for the Simmo crossing and some of the ones he has pulled of are OK as a 2nd spare.

I ended up buying a 120 alloy as my 2nd spare for my 150.
As the offset is only a difference of 5mm,and even though it's illegal, I'm happy to risk it as a 2nd spare I will hopefully hardly ever have to use

OK so got the second spare through Bob Jane T Mart, it's a steely which according to the guys at the shop will match the current wheels on the car. Once the spare tyre goes onto the rim I'll bolt it up to the car to see whether it works.

My only query now is do I need to run different wheel nuts with the steel spare? I am going from the alloy to a much thinner contact area with the steel rim.

          Any ideas?

Most steel rims use a tapered wheel nut. The alloys use a shanked wheel nut.

              ^^^^

Thanks for the quick reply Peter, that's what I was thinking. I will need a different set of nuts if/when I put the steely on.

              Cheers
