  • GX rims and tyres

    G'day

Recently upgraded 95 series Prado to second hand 2009 150 Series GX. It is fitted with the standard 6.5" alloy rims and 265/65R17 Dunlop Grandtrek tyres. From reading the forum, it sounds as though these tyres should not be fitted onto the 6.5" rims.

Can someone please advise the legalities of this and the likely problems that may arise?

Perhaps I should take this up with the dealer if the 265s are in fact illegal?

Maybe I could buy a new set of 245 tyres for the vehicle and some wider steel rims to use on the camping trailer with the 265s. Hopefully they would be interchangeable in an emergency.

Any advice or experience would be greatlt appreciated.

Check with the local tyer dealer if you have any doubt about the legality of the boots. If not legal go back to the dealer and request that your vehicle be made roadworthy as it was part of the deal. Do it quickly don't waste time.
I think you are correct about the size.

There are several calculators on the net. The ideal rim width for:
      245/70R17 is 7 to 8.5
      265/65R17 is 7.5 to 9

I'm not sure about legalities but fitting tyres on rims 1" outside the ideal range isn't the best thing to do.

Are you sure they are alloy? the GX narrow rims are steel, it may already have GXL rims on it if they are alloy and these are 7.5" so ok.

On the 150, the GX rims are alloy. OP might want to check what rims he has as the previous owner may have upgraded to the GXL rims already.

Thanks to all for your replies. It's a bit of a mine field! I will discuss with the dealer and see what we can come up with.

              Thanks again.

Looking at upgrading the types on my GX soon. what have people fitted lately to their GX rims? I'm after something mostly for highway, with sand / gravel driving on the weekends. Something slightly more aggressive and a little taller than the standard would be ideal.

Look forward to hearing what you've out on yours....

In NSW you are limited (by law) to +15mm diameter, which means that without getting an engineering certificate you are pretty much stuck with the standard size unless you accept the (possibly remote) risk of invalidating insurance, defect notices etc.

I run Coopers A/T3's on our GXL at the moment, and they are available in 245/70R17 to fit the Prado GX wheels (we run that combination on our camper). I've been very impressed so far, they seem to chip less than the S/T's on my Hilux, they're only very slightly noisier than the factory tyres and work well on road, mud and rock. I don't do much sand driving so I can't comment there! I know some people have had (or read about) bad experiences with Coopers tyres, but I've clocked many hundreds of thousands of km on S/T's, A/T3's and other Coopers tyres, both on and off road and haven't had any problems. I would happily recommend A/T3's.

In the end I went for Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armour 245/70R17s. I'll let you know how they go...
