  • Replacement of original Dunlop AT20 tyres

The original Dunlop AT20 tyres have now covered 41,000kms and will probably see 45,000 before they need replacing. Is this considered average mileage for this particular tyre? Almost all of these kms have been covered just driving around the suburbs with the occasional trip away towing a 2 tonne caravan. What I am seeking in a replacement tyre is quietness, comfort and greater mileage. I never go off road so that is not a requirement. Any suggestions?

    Regards,

    Jeff

dont think u will get a quiter tyre then the grandtrecks hence why they use them. Klms wise thats about what thats ok.you would know what glenmore parks like not a straight road in the place and the average klms from people i speak to in my area including myself is around 30 thou and the tyres are screwed even my wifes buzbox which weighs jackshit also running dunlop from th factory but last set i put yoko's which have now done 35k might make it to 40. When i had the bf's on the last 3 4wd's would have lasted till 80k easily but tjey are an A/T so are noisier and bloody expensive now to buy. Grandtrecks you can get for around the $260 if you shop around .i fint them a bit worse then the yoko's for feathering...cheers steve

I know you want road tyres but if you want kms go for a bfg a/t: I'll get 120,000km out of the current set on my bus and i got similar out of the last set.

Yeah they cost a bit more but that's almost 3 times the km for less than 50% greater initial cost.

I wont get 120 thou out of my BFG's thats for sure, 70 - 75 will see them out.

As for what tyres to get, I would suggest go for dunlops again, but rather than buy new ones see if you can pick up a set from someone on here who has bought a new Prado and want to go to an AT or MT tyre.

I sold the tyres of my Prado that had only done 300kms to a member for $750 for 5 tyres, doesn't matter if the K's are a bit low if you get them cheap.

            Cheers Andrew

Yeah just realised I should probably mention I run 6 tyres, not 4. Whoops

Hi Wooley, That is impressive mileage! I have just googled the BFG A/T tyre and it appears to me to be a semi off road tyre. Whilst I am looking for good mileage, a quiet and comfortable ride is also a priority for me. Have you or any other members had any experience with the BFG Long Trail T/A Tour tyre?

Hi Andrew, That is a real option should the opportunity present itself in the next month or so. Regards, Jeff

Jeff, I will get just over 100,000 km from the original grandtrecks AT20. I run approx 40psi on the highway, and have gone offraod quite a bit, they are fine in the sand if you air down the prerssure appropriately, but I just know they won't be much good in the mud, ....but beach and gravel and dirt roads etc they are fine, and the highway driving is no probelm at all as do quite a long commute to and from work. So I recon you could stick with the grandtrecks given that you drive the highway and the suburbs, and as has been suggested, you may be able to pick up a set of grantreks from someone who wants a better offraod tyre from new, and so you could get some 'almost new' second hand AT20s for a very reasonable price. (BTW I rotate all tyres, including the spare every 10,000km, and do a wheel alignment every 20,000km)

Maybe put a post in the wanted section. Also lots of people trade these tyres when they upgrade, maybe check out a few suppliers for near new grandteks, especially if you find a tyre dealer near a large Toyota dealer.

                      Cheers Andrew

In our previous 2000 Prado, I got similar mileage out of the original Grandtrek Dunlops, but when I moved on to the new and "improved" Grandtrek AT20 tyres, I only got 45,000kms out of them, which is about the same as I expect to get from my 2010 Prado with the same AT20 tyres. Regards, Jeff.

Hi Steve, Yes, the Grandtreks are quiet and reasonably comfortable, it is just the mileage that concerns me a little. Regards, Jeff.

Hi brogers, Very interesting that you have managed to squeeze that many kms out of these tyres, especially as you say that you have gone off road quite a bit as well. Just yesterday I increased the tyre pressures up from 36 psi to 40 psi on the recommendation of my local tyre dealer. The difference in the increase of the harshness of the ride was apparent as soon as I drove out of his driveway. Accordingly, tomorrow I will be reducing the pressures back to 36psi to return the ride to a more pleasant experience even at the expense of a reduction in the mileage by a few thousand. Because of the type of driving I do which only includes suburban and highways, comfort and quietness are paramount. BTW, I have my tyres rotated every 6 months (about 7000kms) when I have the Prado serviced. Regards, Jeff.

Hi brogers, I think I will take up the suggestion of you and others and post a wanted to buy notice for a set of new Grandtreks from members who have just purchased a new Prado and want to upgrade their tyres to something more agressive. Regards, Jeff.
