  • Tyre pressure too high?

    Hi All.

Took the delivery of a new Prado 150 GXL D4D last month from dealership
Just check yesterday n tyre pressure was at 37 psi for all 4. Is that normal or ok?
Manual stated it should be 29 Psi.

    Please advise. Thanks

Completely normal and in fact better for the wear of the tyres. I run 40psi.

hey Andrew, very interesting the difference between the same vehicles/tyre size and wear.
I was running 35-36 wear was ok.
for one set of tyres i ran 40 p.s.i (save fuel? no) 10,000klms 6 months saw them gone from 14mm all over to 12mm at the sides and 10mm in the centre area.
I put a set of atz4ribs on 7 months ago. done around 15,000klms at 37-38psi same thing, 14.5mm new, no 10mm in centre and 12 mm at sides.
I dont know what some are doing different but it doesnt make sense, im getting overinflation wear and you are not???
i have a new set of bfg a/t on now they are 37psi, im considering dropping them. id like to see even wear.

any ideas how the results differ so much?

p.s i do inflate them more with load etc.

Same here 40psi in my BFG ATs - Plus I used to run 38 - 40psi in the OEM tyres. I only drop under this for dirt roads etc, to improve the ride.

Uneven wear is a great indicator on pressures. If the centre wears more than the edges then you are running too high pressure. It also depends how long the car is run and at what speed. The exception are the rears on my clubby, doesn't seem to matter if I run 36psi or 40psi the tyres wear out really quickly........................................... ....... Couldn't possibly have anything to do with 360kW and 650Nm or the position of the throttle so not sure what the cause is.

Tyre pressures is one of those subjects where there really is no right or wrong answer, driving style, fuel consumption, comfort, handling are all things that each person will put a different prioritory too. Anyway its in the 120 section but there is a thread on tyre pressures and what people run here http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...ssure-Database

A look through that will give you a feel for whats normal and whats not.

                Cheers Andrew

I had the exact same problem with mine before I sold it, perhaps it's a design flaw? (Mine never had the 360kw, 650nm combo though )

29psi is ok for down town tokyo...way too low for here, honestly, I run between 38 and 40psi (cold of course) for highway driving, and lower it significantly for sand as per other therads, but 29psi is indeeed way too low for general on road driving in australia, 29 would be ok for dirt roads. If you run at 29psi all the time you will wear out your tyres much quicker, and whilst the ride might be a bit softer, I found that the steering is actually better at the higher pressures

The pressure the manufacturers put on the sticker is for comfort only , not for good wear , any 4x4 will usually require a minimum of 36psi , most need to be run around the 38-40 psi

Thanks guys for the great feedback.

No wonder. I thought the Prado suspension were a bit stiff because it was not as comfortable as my previous ride when comes to bumps.

Bung on a polariser and run them at 22psi

i ran my dunlops at 40psi and got 105,000kms out of them (would've probably lasted a further 10-15k if i pushed it).

Just to make things more interesting, my coopers in the last 10,000 km have shown an average depth of 12.20mm in the centres of the treads and around 11.30mm on the sides. This tells me at 40psi cold, I might have them set a little too low cold ?? Thoughts ?
