  • Cleaning up the spare tyre mount when the spare wheel cover has been removed

Apologies if this has already been addressed somewhere as I was unable to find an appropriate thread.

Is there a way to clean up or remove the plastic mount that the spare wheel cover attaches to. I have just upgraded my rubber to Cooper ST MAXX 265,70,17's and the cover nolonger fits and I would like to try and mod the junk thats left over to give it a cleaner look.

Has anyone attempted this on a GXL 150? Any advise appreciated.

    Cheers

Unbolt it all and just put the tyre carrier back on?

You will need to put the screws back in the white plastic plugs on the backdoor otherwise the door isn't sealed. When I come up with a cover I will replace the plugs with proper bungs. I took mine off within 30 minutes of getting it home and the plastic bits had already scratched the paintwork. Cannot think how bad it would be after you get some build up of detritus in there and a few ks of rubbing.

I have the same tyres. I replaced the original plastic and bracket with kaymar bracket to space the rubber off the door a bit and it will take a light pole or other accessory later if I get around to it.

Hi Mudeye, how did you go? I am about to purchase 5 x Cooper ST Maxx and go through the mod's to the back door. Any hints and tips would be appreciated. Have you got a pick of the end result?

I am only running 275/65 17s and the spare is really close to the back door. So much that I will be fitting an AMTS spacer this weekend. I also bought a vinyl cover that has had the centre cut out to allow the camera to work. I need to get a drawstring fitted to pull it tight and tidy that up.
